Rafa Benitez Already Preparing For Summer Transfers

We may or may not get Andros Townsend over the line in January, although at the moment that looks a bit doubtful.

But in the summer, we expect Rafa Benitez to change the Newcastle squad quite a bit – just like he did last summer – but this time to get us ready when we are hopefully back in the world’s most popular and most watched sports league – the English Premier League.

If Rafa cannot sign Townsend this month he could well go after the player in the summer – depending on how well Christian Atsu and any winger we bring in on loan this month performs.

At the moment that winger could be Swansea’s Mo Barrow with the Chronicle reporting a loan deal is very close.

Ben Osborn – 22 year-old Nottingham Forest winger

Some of the other players Newcastle have inquired about this month in the Championship could also be targets this summer.

At that time Newcastle will have big money to spend – especially if we are promoted back to the Premier League – as looks likely now – but nothing is ever certain in football.

One of the players Rafa is said to be keen on is Ben Osborn of Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have a good relationship with the Forest club having signed Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles from them for a measly £7M in the summer of 2014 and both are starters in the first team this season.

That was a great purchase by Newcastle for just £7M and Rafa has vastly improved each player.

If that double signing was on the recommendation of Graham Carr then Graham deserves praise for that.

22 year-old Ben Osborn is still being tracked by Rafa according to the Chronicle and we could go in for him in the summer with his transfer thought to be around £4M.

Ben was born in Derby and has already appeared 30 times with two goals for Forest this season after making his debut in the Championship back in March 2014 against Ipswich.

Since that time he has played 116 times for the club with 8 goals.

His second goal of the season was a stunner – the winner in the vital 1-0 win over Bristol City last Saturday.

Benitez is said to be impressed with the player and the Newcastle manager is willing to pay £4M (or more?)  for the Englishman who has played for the England U18, U19 and U20 sides.

Ben has been a regular starter for three seasons at Nottingham Forest and is an experienced Championship player and could be very good value for £4M – possibly in the summer.

We also wouldn’t be too surprised if Newcastle go after the two Croatian teenagers Filip Benkovic and Ante Coric we have been linked with by the press in Croatia.

The deal is proving difficult this month with Newcastle still an English second division side.

But in the summer that could all change and Rafa – as we know – can be very influential and convincing in getting players to sign for Newcastle – and it’s so much easier when we are a Premier League club again.

To end – here’s the fabulous goal Ben Osborn scored for Forest on Saturday.

    repost;
most managers will have more then one option to try and sign for each position needed, rafa probably wanted townsend coz he’s worked with him before knows what he offers and thought with the dealings with palace we could do a good deal on loan till the summer, then if palace were relegated any relegation clause townsend no doubt has in his contract would come in to play….but palace havent went for it…so he’s moved on to the next target for that position….that will either force palace to deal now or we pick up a player on loan he feels can do the job.

BobbyBee, from last thread. What is the projecting all about?

I am attempting to keep the discussion fact based, perhaps you should try facts sometimes, instead of making up your own version of events.

i do think ritchie could play the ten position as he has an eye for goal and a pass,i just think if it was something rafa was thinking about he may of tried him in that position at some stage before now….unless its a very recent thought that has just emerged, having seen him play and the lack of perez, diame talents showing thru at the ten position.

I see Isaac Hayden stopped to help someone who was having a fit. Media need to highlight more of this type of behaviour from players instead of focusing on the tools. Ok, maybe helping out should come naturally to everyone, but unfortunately it doesn’t. Football is full of knackers and corruption at the moment. Maybe if this incident is made public, it would go some way to repairing the over all rep of the sport

I hope all this talk of Championship players is a smoke and mirrors tactic to keep the paper’s eyes away from what we’re really doing. If we don’t get anyone in January, so be it, we’ll get who we want once we’ve been promoted as champions in the summer.

    In Rafa we trust.

Jib…….. This fascination of yours with Wales has been going on for some considerable time now , never mind Cardiff being the Capital . As you always vehemently defend Welshie and become particularly upset about the sheep jokes that all other bloggers love, it does make one wonder whether you and him are not one of the same and it is in fact you that is the sheep lover to go with your other peculiarities.

    Bobby,
So let me get this straight on the same day just about that we accept an installment based deal for a player we didn’t want to sell we then just stumped up 10M in cash for Dwight Gayle. I don’t think so.

Newcastle have reportedly made an approach for Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero – and fans on Twitter believe it would be a fantastic signing.
HITC Sports claim that the Championship leaders are still in talks about signing Andros Townsend but have also asked about Swans duo Montero and Modou Barrow.

Two for the price of one then ?

“Newcastle are displaying serious interest in taking Modou Barrow, the Banjul born, Swedish bred winger on loan until the end of the season. The Gambian/Scandi has struggled to establish himself in south Wales and Newcastle fans would be infinitely keener on Robert Snodgrass or Andros Townsend. A mooted move for the latter has hit an impasse but only time will tell if Barrow is merely a red herring in a possible game of bluff designed to ensure Townsend ends up back on Tyneside – or a player genuinely coveted by Rafa Benitez……And, remember, Mike Ashley doesn’t really want to spend this month but Benitez feels investment is necessary so much hinges on whether the owner or manager wins that particular battle of wills……”

Montero has I think been injured so hasn’t played much and is therefore on the edge of the Swansea squad.
Not for the first time might Newcastle look to rehabilitate a player, get them playing well and restore their career – all at a good price of course !
