Rafa Talks Transfers, Injuries, Townsend, Mitro And Darlow

Rafa Benitez has just completed his press conference for the FA Cup 4th round tie at Oxford United tomorrow afternoon.

We have to stand a decent chance to get through to the next round with Rafa again expected to give opportunities to some of the fringe players tomorrow.

Some of Rafa’s comments are now being reported on the Newcastle United Twitter account and on Chronicle Live.

Here are some of Rafa’s comments today in no particular order:

“January is quite difficult, because sometimes they don’t want to sell or the prices are too high.”

“Still I am positive but there is no news. We still have some time. You know I like Andros but no news”

“We are not considering selling Darlow – all 3 goalkeepers need to compete” Elliot has to play some games to get his fitness”

“We have Anita, Gayle and Aarons injured, but the others are fine.”

“I think that we have to balance the team with some young players and some players coming back from injuries.”

“It’s important to approach the game using the squad. We have three players away, so we need to balance the team.”

“Mitro’s lost some sessions but we need to use the squad. Players coming back from injuries is good news – Gamez back too.”

“The FA Cup is a huge competition and it is a massive game for them. A tough game for us. But I have confidence in my team”

It’s good are injuries are not too bad with Gamez now available too and Mitro also back – let’s hope Dwight Gayle is back in a week or two.

So we should see a somewhat mixed team tomorrow. Some youth and players looking for match fitness / returning from injury.

Perhaps Elliot will get the starting spot?

Interesting comment on Mitro too. Sounds like he might not be quite ready but perhaps needed, I guess he’ll be on the bench then.

Townsend apparently wants to return to NUFC but is there any evidence of that?

Would Rafa be chasing him if he didn’t?

Why wouldnt Towsend want to come here.

He’s not wanted at Palace and he played his best football here. His move to Palace has not helped him with regards to England so he’d be better of coming here and playing in the Prem next season (hopefully) under a manager that gets the best out of him.

I would almost bet that his wages remained about the level we were paying him (by all accounts we paid a fair whack to him)

Yo…I don’t think that’s been in doubt. Just the semantics of said chase.

thats the first time Rafa has actually named Townsend as the player he likes.
maybe Rafa putting a bit of pressure on Townsend to push for a deal from the Palace end who knows

Why did he feel he had to say ‘We are not considering selling Darlow’?

I keep picking Elliot for the cup games but Rafa doesn’t appear to be paying attention, just (to quote a famous starship captain) ‘make it so’.

If we do sign Gabriel Pires I hope he’s as good as the former Arsenal player of the same name.

    Some people doubted it mate

    Ron
Not to my knowledge but they rarely do in public. Someone told the press he wants to come back though and as I say I doubt Rafa would spend such a chunk of his time to bring him back if Townsend had said no

Also from what he is saying there is probably going to be a few yung-uns playing Saturday. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Sterry, Finlay and Barlaser in the team.

Essex…Wasn’t Darlow linked with Chelsea this week? Maybe he’s just responding to reports.

Yo…That we were interested in Townsend? I thought the debate hinged on whether we wanted to buy or only loan, not that there was interest. Not that it’s a big deal.

McCarthy and Townsend on loan with an option to buy if we go up

    Big Sam…
What a spiteful, huffy pratt. Doesn’t see why he should let players go out on loan when he’s been refused loans by other clubs.
Take your ball and sod off home then!

    Oh no bloody Townsend resurfaces.
My hopes of not getting him back seem no to be hinging on the belief that Bentitez does like a lot of people.
I mean he likes/loves his missus and kids but does not want them to play football.
    Please no -somebody else.

Looks like he is being given enough funds to shore up Palace and do another remarkable, irritating survival trick.
    More’s the pity..
    But we live in hope.

Van Aanholt off to Palace (talk about jumping from the frying pan) and Djilobodji getting a four match ban – great time to be a Mackem! Chins up SMBs, at least you have defensive powerhouse Lescott to help keep you up this year. Loving it.

    Essex Geordie Bill

I’d expect that he was responding to a direct question from a reporter along the lines of, “There are rumors that Darlow is being considered by a number of clubs, is he for sale?” Or something like that.

Potentially his mention of Andros was from a similarly directed question where he wasn’t the one to bring the player up but instead the journalist directly asked him about Townsend and he used his name in the response.

Overall, reading anything into these kinds of comments is pointless as they’re taken out of context in a report like this and barely give us even part of the story.

Looking forward to some youn-uns tomorrow and hopefully Gamez and Mitro.

Surprised Rafa name checked Andros in that interview. Wonder if that means he’s confident of getting him in this window? He normally goes about his transfer business without alerting other clubs to the players he’s after.

Sterry is cup tied but the other two put in a good showing in the last round. It’s quite nice to have these options these days, no square pegs in round holes anymore!

A daft thought popped into my head, which player has been mentioned the most during all of the Toon transfer windows. I think it’s one of two but are there other contenders?

While it’s not good not to obsess about rivals – I cannot help but notice that Brighton also have a tough 5 weeks coming up after this FA cup weekend.

    8 games

    February
    Thurs 2nd Huddersfield away
    Sun 5th Brentford away
    Sat 11th Burton home
    Tues 14th Ipswich home
    Sat 18th Barnsley away
    Sat 25th Reading home
    March
    Sat 4th Forest away
    Tues 7th Rotherham away
