Newcastle Could Still Get Their Top Targets This Month

There are now only three full days to go in this month’s transfer market and it’s possible that Newcastle may not get the two players through the door they want – a winger and a central midfielder – and it looks like it could go down to the very last day before Newcastle bring in any players at all this month.

On the other hand, surprisingly enough Newcastle are still in with a chance of getting their top targets – Andros Townsend of Crystal Palace and James McCarthy of Everton.

Andros Townsend and James McCarthy

In Townsend’s case there was news yesterday that Sam Allardyce wants Chancel Mbemba on loan for the rest of the season to shore up his defense and if Rafa agrees to that we could bring Andros in on loan.

The question is whether Rafa will let a center-back leave to get a winger in, although we do seem to be quite well off with good center-backs this season.

As for James McCarthy, it seems to be between Crystal Palace and Newcastle as to which club he joins on loan this month and we are buoyed with the news in the Chronicle that McCarthy is willing to join Newcastle.

Maybe that is a better option than joining Palace and possibly being relegated this season?

Rafa did admit yesterday during his interviews that it could go down to the wire.

This is some of what he said as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“Obviously, we know what we want,” “Can we do it at the last minute? Maybe. Would it be ideal? No.”

“Obviously, for me, it would have been better to have players here on January 1st, but we couldn’t do it.”

“If we can do something that really we need even on the last day, fine.”

“I would like to do it before. If we can do it on Monday or Sunday instead of Tuesday, that will be much better.”

“We are so close that it is just to do a couple of things that will improve a good squad, because the team is doing well.”

“The players are working so hard and doing so well.”

“At the same time, you can say ‘maybe we don’t need more players’.”

“Yes, we need something because you have injuries and you have problems.”

“Still I have confidence that it’s so obvious, we will do something.”

There was news yesterday in the Chronicle that the  23 year-old Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Appelt Pires – Gabriel – is not a target of Newcastle this month.

But maybe Newcastle are lining something up with him for the summer?

I wonder if it’s a draw against Oxford , whether it’s extra time and penalties?

Maybe that nice Mr Tuff can tell me !

Extraordinary that Benitez can be so sanguine, on the surface at least, given that it’s a minute to midnight and there is no back-up for Shelvey unequivocally on the way. Is he the only one who follows the fortunes of NUFC across the world who has failed to see that desperate need? Maybe, ultimately, it’s all about the money. At the end of the day, our Spanish hero is probably just another talking-head, and fat Mike and his inner sanctum really still call the shots. Then again, if our preferred transfer targets watch us on TV, it might be “Thanks, but no thanks…I want to play proper football…”

Rafa clearly wants to strengthen the side in this window. If he’s not allowed to it’ll be, imo, down to Ashley being unwilling to buy rather than to take players on loan. His disregard of a basic principal of business, that you speculate in order to accumulate.
A few millions spent now would be rewarded ten fold by promotion to the PL.

Watching McClaren on tv last night reminded me what a shallow nob he really is, jumping around screaming instructions when he knew the cameras were on him! Also the dressing room drama before the game was embarrassing when you know how useless he was at Newcastle!
