Newcastle are still going after both Andros Townsend and James McCarthy with just three full days left in this January transfer window and it’s possible we can sign both players before the deadline.
There’s a report in London that Newcastle are ahead in the race to sign 26 year-old Everton midfielder James McCarthy, who is now thought to be more interested in joining Newcastle and helping with our promotion than joining Crystal Palace and helping Sam Allardyce perhaps save yet another club from relegation.

Rafa is hoping his pursuit of his top two targets does not go down to the wire and yesterday in his press conference he said it would be much better to get the players in before Tuesday.
We assume Managing Director Lee Charnley is working around the clock to try to get Andros and James through the door – and at this stage if Lee can manage that it would be a real coup.
While it’s got to be unlikely given the late stage of the transfer window, clubs often don’t decide until they have looked at all their other options – so it’s still possible.
Rafa wants to improve the side in this transfer window although he admits he’s pleased with the squad he built last summer.
But as a manager Rafa says you are always looking to improve the side.
Mike Ashley – please take note.
James has been squeezed out of the Everton side ever since new manager Ronald Koeman joined last summer and he has made only nine appearances in all competitions this season.
But we’ve always thought James was pure class and under Rafa Benitez he could become a really top player for us with Rafa able to bring out the very best in the Glaswegian.
If Newcastle are going to sign players it will need to be done fairly quickly and it would now be a huge disappointment if we cannot get somebody in by Tuesday night.
Here’s hoping we can do it.
