Shearer Unhappy With Benitez – But There Are Two Sides To Argument

Alan Shearer has never understood why players need to be rested during a season, but there’s medical evidence that if players play too much they pick up injuries as the season goes on.

Alan never liked to be rested during his career and wanted to play every single game, but in today’s game that’s no longer possible except for a very few top players who play most games for their clubs.

Alan was not happy at all at the very weak team Rafa played in the Fa Cup yesterday at Oxford, although we did manage to get through the 3rd round of the FA Cup for the first time in five years when we managed to beat Birmingham City after a replay with a similar side.

Alan Shearer – cheating the fans by playing weakened side

But then we basically played the second team yesterday and Oxford United beat us quite easily with three unanswered goals in the second half.

This is what Alan has said to BBC Sport today:

“Playing weakened FA Cup teams shows that clubs care about money, whereas fans care about trophies and that’s very very unfortunate.”

“I don’t get and never have done, the resting of players.” “Yeah I think clubs like Newcastle are cheating their fans.”

“Newcastle fans traveled 250 miles down to Oxford yesterday expecting their team to win and Rafa Benitez puts a weakened team out.”

“They have got one of the biggest and best teams in the Championship, they are six points clear with a game in hand from third, so it’s again very very disappointing.”

We have noticed the top Premier League sides (Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea) do play some fringe players in the cup games, but there are only about four or five fringe players and the basis of the team is the same when half of the players in the team play regularly.

That’s a lot different from Rafa changing nine players like he’s done in a number of games this season – that’s then a whole different side.

Even playing Jonjo Shelvey yesterday could have made the difference, but Rafa’s the manager and he’s responsible for the total results this season and he wants to get Newcastle promoted.

Maybe it’s a little overdone to make nine changes and while you don’t rest nine players in the game it’s possible to field a stronger team with more chance of winning when you rest just four or five players.

But there again, if you don’t give fringe players a game in the cups or against weaker league sides – does that mean the fringe players never play any games during a season unless players get injured?

There’s always two sides to any argument.

This issue is not going away either and next season Rafa will again give fringe players their chance in the Cup games – we just have to hope that by then we have a much stronger squad then we have today.

That’s why we think Rafa is going to change the squad big time again in the summer.

What do you think?

Sutton are in the last 16 of the FA Cup.
From a squad of 26 players that cost 90 million we can’t put a team out.
    Shameful.

Our toon that proves nowt. FIFA have never admitted it or threw anyone under the bus so to speak. It’s swept under the carpet.

I’ll believe it if you can get me the results. 🙂

Aye probably because Townsend is available whereas we aren’t going to get a CM who can do what Shelvey can do

Though if we are going after McCarthy and get both jobs done

He’s had tests done which have proved how old he is. How about you get me the proof / tests that prove he’s older than 22. You do that and I’ll agree with you.

How did okacha do so well in the premier league in his early – mid 40s mate, you haven’t answered that one yet

I’d take townsend if it didn’t mean we let our 3rd best cb go out on loan. I don’t rate Hanley at all

Ed is twisting this big time. He was having a go at Liverpool mainly until Linker mentioned us. You can’t have a go at Liverpool for doing it and then turn round and say but it’s ok for Newcastle to do it.

Have to agree with Shearer, nine changes was far too many especially with the poor team being put out.
On the bright side note key players were injured in a competition we probably could never win.

I actually think Mccarthy could be an upgrade on Hayden, he’s better than colback. I have no qualms about that one as he’d do a job in the premier league. 16m is a bit much though.

I agree it’s tough to to get what we want in this window which is why I think loan deals are the way to go

I would be happy for a cup run where we feel we have a decent chance of winning it. However the squad is still well short of that quality needed.

I am not disappointed we are out, could you imagine a cup run where we played Gayle Darlow Shelvey or Lascelles and one by one we lost them….Promotion would then not happen.

Next year hopefully with promotion, a bit of investment we could do a run.

    In my opinion

Liverpool started with Klavan, Moreno, gini, firmino, origi, Lucas and gomez. The youngsters they had playing for them all played in the carling cup with Woodburn breaking the record for youngest scorer. They bought on Can, Coutinho at halftime and sturridge

We made far to many changes with not enough experience on the pitch, didn’t look to change either when we went behind but what’s done is done.

Arsenal were 3 nil up and bought sanchez on. By all means rest players but 9 changes was to much

Well I think enough has been said about yesterday’s fiasco. Two non league sides in the last 16 says it all about today’s FA CUP. The Toon must now regroup for Wednesday Night. Hope we can get Townsend back in some shape or form but would be sad if we had to let Mbemba go the other way as part of the deal. So far as midfield playmaker is concerned would much prefer Tom Cairney from Fulham if we could offer a good price to prise him away.

Seems Townsend is most likely of the links we currently have and he’d certainly improve the squad which is what we are after

We play Derby on Saturday at home again while Brighton are away again at Brentford on the Sunday. Reckon we will be 4 points clear by Sunday night!

Sometimes the ends justify the means – yes it is disappointing to be dumped out the cup by Oxford but if we get promoted at the end of the season all this will be forgotten.

It makes no sense because the league cup wasn’t treated this way, I don’t think you’d hear as many complaints if Rafa had played rookies like good, barlaser, el mehnni etc etc.

I don’t think promotion is under threat but we can now concentrate on that, a cup run should also give the squad something to continue to fight for. Anyway it’s done.

He would improve the squad if mbemba doesn’t go the other way. If mbemba goes the other way I think it weakens the squad, Hanley is far to slow and immobile for me so if Clark (who I really like) and laschelles (young lad has a few errors in him) get injured then we will be in trouble.

Let’s face it we used to have a squad capable of winning the cup when in the prem, but we were never gonna win it with this squad so although it sounds wrong, what’s the point in stretching the squad by going on a cup run?
Once we’re established back where we belong I’m sure wild horses wouldn’t stop Rafa trying to win the cup.
This manager has a plan and he won’t be knocked off course cos he wants to succeed at Newcastle, unlike others who either didn’t give a toss or were told not to go on a cup run a’la Pardew!

Question: would posters prefer us to reach, say, the FA Cup semi-finals and end up in the play-offs or knocked out early and finish in the top 2?

Have to agree with Mr Shearer but as below, enough has been said on the matter.
I wouldn’t swap mbemba for townsend, townsend has no loyalty or commitment and clearly only looks after himself. I can understand it to some degree but when at spuds nobody wanted him and we took a gamble and got the best out of him. Six months later he’s off to the first offer crystal palace, citing his international aspirations as the reason. Well it all went Pete tong and he’s now regularly a sub so wants to come back. Rumours also suggest he only wants a loan to review his options in the summer. Sorry but townsend can do one for me and I certainly won’t be disappointed if he doesn’t come. Much rather have a central midfielder or keep our pennies till the summer. We have enough to get us up imo.
