Alan Shearer has never understood why players need to be rested during a season, but there’s medical evidence that if players play too much they pick up injuries as the season goes on.
Alan never liked to be rested during his career and wanted to play every single game, but in today’s game that’s no longer possible except for a very few top players who play most games for their clubs.
Alan was not happy at all at the very weak team Rafa played in the Fa Cup yesterday at Oxford, although we did manage to get through the 3rd round of the FA Cup for the first time in five years when we managed to beat Birmingham City after a replay with a similar side.
Alan Shearer – cheating the fans by playing weakened side
But then we basically played the second team yesterday and Oxford United beat us quite easily with three unanswered goals in the second half.
This is what Alan has said to BBC Sport today:
“Playing weakened FA Cup teams shows that clubs care about money, whereas fans care about trophies and that’s very very unfortunate.”
“I don’t get and never have done, the resting of players.” “Yeah I think clubs like Newcastle are cheating their fans.”
“Newcastle fans traveled 250 miles down to Oxford yesterday expecting their team to win and Rafa Benitez puts a weakened team out.”
“They have got one of the biggest and best teams in the Championship, they are six points clear with a game in hand from third, so it’s again very very disappointing.”
We have noticed the top Premier League sides (Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea) do play some fringe players in the cup games, but there are only about four or five fringe players and the basis of the team is the same when half of the players in the team play regularly.
That’s a lot different from Rafa changing nine players like he’s done in a number of games this season – that’s then a whole different side.
Even playing Jonjo Shelvey yesterday could have made the difference, but Rafa’s the manager and he’s responsible for the total results this season and he wants to get Newcastle promoted.
Maybe it’s a little overdone to make nine changes and while you don’t rest nine players in the game it’s possible to field a stronger team with more chance of winning when you rest just four or five players.
But there again, if you don’t give fringe players a game in the cups or against weaker league sides – does that mean the fringe players never play any games during a season unless players get injured?
There’s always two sides to any argument.
This issue is not going away either and next season Rafa will again give fringe players their chance in the Cup games – we just have to hope that by then we have a much stronger squad then we have today.
That’s why we think Rafa is going to change the squad big time again in the summer.
What do you think?
