Newcastle Linked With New Defender Target

There’s a report in the Star today that Newcastle are interested in Celtic center-back Jozo Simunovic, the 22 year-old 6ft 3in Croatian U21 International.

The transfer fee for the youngster is said to be £6M with relegation strugglers Sunderland and Crystal Palace also said to be interested in the player, who has played for all the Croatian Youth sides.

Of course it’s difficult to judge players in Scotland especially when they play for Celtic, so dominant are the Scottish giants these days north of the border.

Celtic are a full 19 points above the next placed side – you got t – it’s Rangers, the other Glasgow side back again in Scotland’s top flight.

This is the second season for Simunovic at Celtic after he signed on from Dynamo Zagreb for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2015.

He has so far played 35 times for Celtic with a single goal.

Brendan Rodgers does not want to let his Croatian center-back leave the club, as he tries to build a side that can compete more successfully in Europe in the future.

Newcastle do not need a center-back brought in this month, but Rafa Benitez will be looking at bringing in another center-back in the summer, because he is likely to allow Chancel Mbemba to leave the club.

At that time Jozo Simunovic could become a potential transfer target when we are hopefully back again in the Premier League.

What do you think?

Probably agents in overdrive touting their player all over trying to get a better deal, either at Celtic or elsewhere…….i agree though Bobby…..its starting to get annoying now

Your point about Ashley and the bottom line is more than fair but….it’s Ashley, the Ashley who’s swung between no spend and spending millions on players regardless of the squad/ manager needs and who’ve proved to be unsuitable for the Club.

There’s no pattern to his behaviour apart from as you said, the bottom line!

Nice to see Barnsley finally picking Arma’s runs at last. Lovely run and finish on Saturday by the lad. Unlucky with one that clipped the bar as well. My mouth waters with the prospect of Shelvey picking his runs out with his finishing power.

IMO the team need to review their existing strengths and weaknesses, to build on a good first half season and ensure promotion with their existing players. Assuming that promotion will take place, despite the recent disappointment of a foreshortened cup run, I would summarise as follows:

Darlow is obviously the starting GK and should improve with the number of games ready for the PL. The others will just have to stay on their toes, in event of an injury.

Hanley has played himself into a starting place and there is an opportunity to rotate one of the central defenders. I did notice from the highlights that J.Gamez was using his experience to help guide the youngsters but I don’t think that puts him above Yedlin. Although Hanley would struggle to cover the forward thinking RB. Also Haidara needs more games to get back to his peak, which we have never seen, but I don’t think these decisive games are a good time unless as a sub. However Mbemba could be given some games at RB to give him some much needed game time in defense if he is not going to be tried in DCM.

Colback looked like he was getting up to speed, before these injuries knocked him back. Although not the first on in the rank he is good to rotate with the others. Hayden and Shelvey are definite starters for me and the young lad is improving everytime he plays. I also think Diame should be withdrawn from the attacking role in order to establish the option of four senior players going into the PL next season. I struggle with how much Shelvey has to drop back into CD to get on the ball and work his magic, but it does work so why fix it?

To me the attack does require more attention as all the players have failed to be consistent and maybe things need reorganising for the benefit of the team. Rafa seems to be loyal to individual players that perform well but often that is only 50% of the front four. For example, Gayle may need to move out wide or Ritchie move inside to accommodate others who need to improve.

Murphy has been a very willing back up option and although not incredibly gifted, seems to have the knack of being in the right place at the right time. I think he could still do a job I the PL not as the main striker but as a galvanizing figure head, that actually produces results. Gayle reminds me very much of Ferdinand and as a result I think we need a star striker to come in during the summer to lead the line.
