L’Equipe are reporting today Newcastle are now trying to make a last minute move for Angers winger Nicolas Pepe – there was a similar report in the same publication last Wednesday.
The asking price is €10M (£8.5M) for the 21 year-old and Newcastle are reported ready to pay that fee to get the Ivory Coast International to Newcastle.
21 year-old Angers winger Nicolas Pepe
Hull have had a €9M offer for the player but Angers want the full amount for their forward and they want the forward loaned back to them for the rest of the season – so Pepe wouldn’t be much good to us this season.
Presumable they want him to stay at Angers to help them in their fight against relegation – they are 16th in Ligue 1 and one point above the relegation zone.
We don’t think this news has much credibility – why buy the player now when we are trying to get Andros Townsend over the line who could help us get promoted this season?
And Mike Ashley is reportedly not making money available to Rafa this month for permanent transfers, so why give him £8.5M for a player who cannot help us this season?
Doesn’t make any sense.
Pepe is a player who’s been tracked by Graham Carr and we’ve been linked with him in the French press for a couple of months now and he could still become a target this summer.
Nicholas was born in France of Ivory Coast parents and he plays for the Ivory Coast and won his first cap a couple of months ago in a 0-0 friendly game against France.
Pepe was part of the Ivory Coast squad at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon this month.
He is under contract until June 2019 and joined Angers in 2013 from Poitiers FC; he’s made 19 appearances with 2 goals and one assist for his club this season.
He can play on either wing and has played 27 times in total for Angers after making his debut two years ago in November 2014 against Ajaccio.
We would be very surprised if Newcastle make any effort to sign this player today.
What do you think?
