Strange Report Of Newcastle’s Late Bid For Forward

L’Equipe are reporting today Newcastle are now trying to make a last minute move for Angers winger Nicolas Pepe – there was a similar report in the same publication last Wednesday.

The asking price is €10M (£8.5M) for the 21 year-old and Newcastle are reported ready to pay that fee to get the Ivory Coast International to Newcastle.

21 year-old Angers winger Nicolas Pepe

Hull have had a €9M offer for the player but Angers want the full amount for their forward and they want the forward loaned back to them for the rest of the season – so Pepe wouldn’t be much good to us this season.

Presumable they want him to stay at Angers to help them in their fight against relegation – they are 16th in Ligue 1 and one point above the relegation zone.

We don’t think this news has much credibility – why buy the player now when we are trying to get Andros Townsend over the line who could help us get promoted this season?

And Mike Ashley is reportedly not making money available to Rafa this month for permanent transfers, so why give him £8.5M for a player who cannot help us this season?

Doesn’t make any sense.

Pepe is a player who’s been tracked by Graham Carr and we’ve been linked with him in the French press for a couple of months now and he could still become a target this summer.

Nicholas was born in France of Ivory Coast parents and he plays for the Ivory Coast and won his first cap a couple of months ago in a 0-0 friendly game against France.

Pepe was part of the Ivory Coast squad at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon this month.

He is under contract until June 2019 and joined Angers in 2013 from Poitiers FC; he’s made 19 appearances with 2 goals and one assist for his club this season.

He can play on either wing and has played 27 times in total for Angers after making his debut two years ago in November 2014 against Ajaccio.

We would be very surprised if Newcastle make any effort to sign this player today.

What do you think?

Is there any evidence to support the claim Ashely is not giving Rafa any money this month? Or that Rafa has ‘demanded’ we sign Townsend?

It seems to me it’s all journalists, probably the same ones that MA banned for many months, stirring trouble. I’m sure Rafa wants signings, what manager doesn’t, but the political consipriacy theories are speculation at best.

    Super.

What Rafa has said on a few occasions is that we need to strengthen the squad for the run in.

Reading through recent posts, it appears it is fine to criticise RAFA (which it is) but if someone offers a response, in RAFA’s defence, they apparently will have no wrong said about him – strange logic!

” Strengthening the squad ” I doubt one player is enough, two might help but three would seem to add the depth that Rafa feels he needs for the push for promotion.
How many will we sign ?

Dare to suggest the lad is not great and look out!
Seems ED saw my alter ego ‘Toontaff’ as one who decided childish trolling was the next step, for daring to slate BIGAL2. Noticed my comment and his comments were removed and the poster who was trolling appears to be banned.

If Pepe has been recommended by Carr, signing him’ll be ok by Ashley. After all, Carr and his recommendations seem to be beyond criticism.

Whereas, and if it’s true, Ashley’s not happy with some or all of Rafa’s buys, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carr’s behind it. After all, if Ashley’s asked Carr for an opinion, he’s gonna give it – especially if his influence over transfers has been curtailed by Rafa’s arrival.

The idea that MA has achieved self sufficiency for the club is being well and truly blown out of the water. The £80m that was spent on transfers last summer was mainly provided by the benefit of being in the PL. It is only now that we have been relegated that our owner had apparently had to provide funds himself towards the ongoing costs.

The desired self sufficiency has been achieved mainly through cost cutting of the playing staff and administration, withdrawing investment from improving the facilities and the image of the club. Along with the free advertising of Sports Direct there has been an inability to attract commercial investment and as a result the club is unable to compete for the necessary quality of players.

As a result we are denied our transfer targets and the manager has a responsibility to develop players internally to provide adequate strength to the squad and an alternative source of finance. The problem is we have cleared away any players with value, are over loaded with players that hold no value monetarily or on the pitch and it is too early for the investments made by Rafa into the Development squad.

It is hard to tell the real truth of the situation, or whether any players will be coming in or going out today. The lack of any movement so far is a clear indication that negotiations are being squeezed for every penny. The result of which in the past have been both successful and also very frustrating.

Of course Charnley’ll be talking to Alexander. When I referred to Allardyce that was using his name as a metaphor for Palace! And he’ll want to get one over on Ashley so will be having an input to Alexander.

would of taken him – took the piss out of Dummett.

I wonder if we are not getting anyone in has nothing to do with ashley – but a lot to do with Carr.

Looks like we have not learned our lesson and are trawling Europe for players when there is decent/good players in the Championship who know the ropes on getting out of it

we need 11 wins from the last 19 games the others need at least 13 from 18 – they aren’t going to do it.
