The Mirror is reporting that Townsend just arrived at Bournemouth and he is in the Crystal Palace squad for the game tonight against the Cherries, so there will be no deal to get him to Newcastle tonight.
The deal is off and we just hope that Rafa Benitez was not messed around by the Newcastle hierarchy with no players coming in this month.
Andros Townsend at Bournemouth tonight
Rafa has wanted Townsend for the last two weeks but the fact that not one player – not even a development player – was brought in is not good and especially when Rafa has made it very clear he wanted to improve the first team squad.
We have to hope that Mike Ashley has not screwed things up (what – again?) by refusing to back Rafa Benitez in this transfer market.
When Rafa agreed to stay there were reported to be clauses in his Newcastle contract, which reflected a number of things – such as how much money he would get in the upcoming transfer windows, so we hope those agreements have been kept by the club.
But unless something dramatic happens in the next four hours – which is now extremely doubtful – Newcastle have managed to come up blank – no players in this month.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating and we brought not one single player in – nowt – zilch – so maybe Mike Ashley believes the squad is strong enough.
Shame on him if we are not promoted in May.
I’m still not sure why we couldn’t do the £13M straight transfer this month – Palace would have gone for that – but maybe Mike didn’t want to spend the money – after all we are second in the Championship – no need to improve the squad.
But we now have to get 100% behind Rafa and the team and hopefully we can win tomorrow night against QPR, but it’s disturbing that other teams like Aston Villa and Leeds United – to name only two – have improved their squads considerably this month.
There’s nothing quite like standing still but Ashley has a habit of doing that – unfortunately – well unless we are in relegation trouble.
