More Woe For Newcastle – Last Minute Own Goal Leads To 2-2 Draw

Newcastle drew tonight’s game at home to QPR after we had gone 1-0 up after 37 seconds through Jonjo Shelvey and 2-1 up, but it was a late own goal from Ciaran Clark that robbed is of the win we needed badly after Saturday’s horror show.

The mistake was a misunderstanding between Clark and goalkeeper Darlow but it’s 2 points dropped after Newcastle should have had this game won long before the end – but we didn’t.

Leeds United and Fulham both won tonight and gained 2 points on us and now we are only 4 points above Reading in 3rd place with a game in hand.

Jonjo Shelvey scores in first minute

This is not the result Newcastle needed tonight after a poor transfer window and out of the FA Cup in the previous game to a League One side.

After going ahead early on with a fabulous goal from Jonjo Shelvey, Connor Washington scored the equalizer just before half-time, but it was Matt Richie who put us back ahead after 54 minutes with a header.

And then QPR goalkeeper Smithies made some great saves as once again Newcastle were not able to kill off the game after we had enough chances to do it – and in the end we paid for that.

The late goal was a disaster for Newcastle and this is really hard to take because of the way we lost 2 points.

This will not help the mood on Tyneside but we really should have won this game – but we are starting to say that too much and it’s getting to be a little bit worrying as clubs lower down are starting to catch us.

This was a real sickener.

If this is what happens after a ‘rest’, fcuk knows how they would have played if they’d been on the bus last Saturday…

And yet you strangely fail to mention the 6-0 v qpr and the 6-1 v preston or the 4-0 against rotherham, the 4-0 v birmingham, the 4-3 v norwich etc etc etc, but hey don’t the let the stats get in the way of a bigoted closed mind.

Cheers for the clarification. I don’t think anything will happen as I think k her only lifted his legs up to make it harder for JM to jump him. He didn’t stretch his legs out and didn’t make contact with his boots. Here’s hoping anyway.

you contradict yourself. you say with the squad we have we should walk the league and then you say it’s the worst squad you’ve ever seen. i think it’s a poor squad, bar 2/3 players and for that reason i think it’s an achievement to be where we are now.

I’m not having a dig here but in then big wins how many were scored without Gayle? It’s an interesting stay that I’d never noticed

I think he got 3 in Norwich game but 3 of the 4 came when we changed tactically and went with both mitro and Gayle up top….maybe 2 up top at home is the way to go?

    Anyway onto the next game

Lascelles certainly won’t be getting that best player award anyways. No standouts for me really but would give it shelvey for the smart finish and odd decent passes he made.

    Belfast,
Is it?? Shouldn’t really matter. Best squad, best manager, best stadium….Playing to our squads strengths we should beat anyone in this division. Hypothetically, if in every game every side played to their top level, we should not lose a game.

A poor result by any measure, but given how we made such an effort to rest players in the cup, a draw is very disappointing.

Still, another game coming up quick to right the wrongs. 3 points there and in the key games over the next 10 and we are laughing.

A depressing draw snatched out of the jaws of victory! That own goal was mind boggling. We lead the league in own goals this season and that was the worst of the bunch. Gutted!!

    Rotonda,
You think with our squad we are doing well? Look at every other team in the top 10. How many of each sides first 11 would be in ours? 3 or 4 at most, which still would leave us with 7 or 8…. This squad should walk the league when compared to the challengers.

    No Rotunda
I didn’t say the squad we have should walk the league, I was saying that there are far too many on this blog who think that.
Defensively & distribution wise very poor. Caught napping dwelling on the ball too often.Shooting and finishing atrocious. Beefman is right CBs now a worry. Would bring Mbemba back for Lascelles. YEdlin love him going forward but too gung ho.Can’t defend. Shelvey will probably get another 3 match ban retrospectively. then we are really in trouble. Best players tonight by a mile Ritchie & Shelvey. Others will be lucky to even make the squad IF we were to get up. That’s my view & it’s fact & not a moan. Wake up those results you mention Rotunda were in the distant past. So get real.

Perez’s first season was far worse than Mitro’s, despite Perez being marginally older. Not sure why Perez got so many plaudits, he has some ability, but he has far more faults and question marks. He could be a decent to good Prem player, but he needs to decide a position. He isn’t a number 10 as of yet, he can’t lead the line, he can’t cross….

He has something which makes him okay in a number of positions, but he is a jack of all, master of none. Maybe more focussed training is required, and Rafa seems to see him as a 10 more than anything else, so hopefully he is getting separate coaching to work and develop those aspects. He could be very good, but it requires more focus.

At last some sense Toon KK. Need to be more realistic on this blog & not just think because we have the most expensive squad, the best supporters & 52000 every other week that we have the divine right to go straight back up. We have to earn it & we certainly didn’t tonight.

Rotunda you are looking at stats and not the bigger picture. Why can Rafa not play 2 up front? Wtf was he doing with the subs? He has spent buckets and could murder this league but he can’t do it because he has always been defence first. Remember villa at end of last season? We needed to win and had a corner and put 2 in the box. Bloke on sky was berating his negativity. Remember home to mackems? Late equaliser when we should have torn them a new one. This is a shit league and Rafa should be doing better with these players. Why not 442 at home when shelvey was out. Because he can’t do it. The smart guys on this site, the ones who are not star struck, can see that.

    West Lancs,
We should walk the league. Very difficult to ever say ‘will’ and guarantee something in football. Rafa is holding us back with his tactics. We are top scorers, but we could have so many more if we didn’t sit back at times. Still, I like to think we are planning towards next season, where caution will be required far more.

We are better than the rest of this league and have a better qualified and more decorated manager. Promotion should be as certain as anything can ever be in sport.

Very true Gayle goals have been big for us but we’ve had bigger wins without him on the pitch. Bigger winning margins, which means goals without him haven’t really been the issue.

I wonder how much of an affect it had on the players mentally knowing they’d been rested in the cup to play in this game

Who actually plays 2 up front these days.

    Players didn’t turn up enough

21 spot on, he must have a little something about him but he’s just so damn inconsistent. You’d think at 23 he’d at least have established himself more than he has. If we go on a decent shopping trip in summer, I’d say loan him out to get a proper run of games, bring him back and see how it goes.

He pisses me off a bit to be fair.

I really hope you are right LG but feel it will be far more difficult than you imagine. Very much depends on Shelvey & Gayle playing every week & it’s just not going to happen. Brighton are now certainties & I don’t think we will have the battlers to get through the play offs which I really fear we may end up in.

Rotonda, if you were happy with what you watched tonight, fair enough. That’s your opinion and prerogative. I happen to disagree, which makes me a “bigot”, apparently. Mate, you need to find a blog where nobody is entitled to any opinion other than yours. When you find it, let Jail and Jib know, they’ll be happy there too. While I’m at it, I’ve said all along Lascelles is rubbish and if you didn’t think he was tonight you are more to be pitied than blamed, as my old Nan used to say. That’s me done.
