Benitez – It Was The Worst Thing That Could Happen

Rafa Benitez was not happy after the game last night and after going through a difficult transfer window in which Lee Charnley and company were unable to get any players in last month, we lost 2 points at home with an own goals in the last minute for a 2-2 draw with lowly placed QPR.

That’s now 13 points we have lost at home this season, mainly against lowly opposition – it’s not good enough.

Rafa Benitez – not happy with result

This is what Rafa said after the game as reported in the Chronicle:

“We had a lot of chances but we didn’t take our chances and we conceded with an own goal, which is the worst thing that can happen,”

“We didn’t take the chances that we had.”  “We needed to score the third goal but we didn’t do it.”

“We’re all disappointed that we couldn’t get three points.”

Newcastle would have gone back to the top of the league with a win and put pressure on Brighton, but we didn’t.

Brighton play at Huddersfield tonight and a win could now take them 4 points ahead of us at the top of the table.

We probably need Brighton to win tonight. The chasing pack are smelling blood.

Many who didn’t watch the game are voting for MOM, I think. Apart from the goal, Shelvey had an OK game, whereas Ritchie was good throughout.

Sammy had a good cameo. We finally started to dominate when he came on.

PS. Boy this league is hard. Many teams equal to ours. Will 80 points do it? What do stats say?

If we do get promoted this season, Rafa will walk in the summer as the usual shenanigans will play out re transfers.

I’m not that bothered if he does go, the problem is the upheavel, and more importantly, the candidate that will be placed in charge as his predecessor.

At the beginning of the season I predicted a play off berth. If that is the case we won’t get promoted. I believe we need to go up automatically, otherwise we’re staying in the championship.

I don’t think the current crop of players are capable of standing the pressure.

And finally, Sameobi getting a game!!

Silly result last night. Everyone giving the ball away in the 1st half. Still, we were much better 2nd half, Perez should have made it 3-1 on a couple of occasions to seal it.

Perez was showing quite a bit of petulance last night after Richie told him off for wasting a golden opportunity,

If he had kept his head we would have won the game, doubt he will start again in the next couple.

Need a balance between resting players and maintaining a winning momentum. Shearer spent a huge amount of time out injured, which impacted on the team and he still seems to not recognise the consequences.

The crowd seemed lethargic last night, probably due to the disappointing transfer window and compounded by a nervous performance. I hope Rafa can revitalise the mood of the squad quickly.

Curiously I wonder if the players internalise the feeling of fans wanting new transfers, interpreting that maybe they are not good enough?

Looks like the mirror article was spot on to an extent about ashley

*rafa benitez will leave us at the end of season via promotion or not
*rafa can’t be trusted with funds, sels hanley gamez all expensive flops
*rafa thinking sels better than krul?
*rafa playing weak team against oxford so we can dish up that tripe with rest?
*if Ashley is worried about benitez spending money on over rated flops i can understand but i get the feeling he just wants to mess up and going to penny pinch forever
*we won’t ever do well while Ashley is here
    *please china buy us
*very under whelming that aston villa can pay over 10 million on 3 strikers which is 30 million and we can’t make one signing.
*understand benitez been upset but he did not help his cause buying sels for over 5 million when he had krul Darlow elliot and Woodman, waste of money
if we are going back to money pinching again and not targeting big things next season i much prefer chris hughton aa manager of us.

I agree, the team were playing poorly and that brought the mood in the stands down a bit.

It was quite frustrating, and there were a lot of what if’s like when Richie had his shin raked, what if the player was sent off, but at the end of the day we only have ourselves to blame.

We scored an early goal, but again instead of going for it, we took our foot of the gas and let them back into it. We grew more and more complacent in that first half and in the end it cost us.

Rafa needs to sort this out, and soon or we will end up stuck stuck in this league.

For the supposedly best team in the league we never seem to strangle a game. I never like to hear “if only”, as it just indicates to me that the team were not good enough to win the game themselves.

Why people keep cracking on about what a good team we have I don’t know.
It is a solid championship team with a couple of good players.
We could have done with an injection of talent in the recent window. Rafa clearly wanted it. The failure to get anyone could have a big impact on our hopes for promotion.

I would have taken a point after the first half which was shocking and Dummett kept us in the game. We play with no tempo at home which makes it easier for the opposition. Hopefully that’s the end of the Perez experiment he was atrocious.

I was alarmed at the apparent lack of a gameplan yet again- we go 1 nil up and then don’t know what to do. The amount of failed passes across both defence and midfield last night was ridiculous, and there was little build up play.

That is why we can go from beating decent teams to losing against lowly teams- there’s no gameplan and so no consistency. and everyone, including Rafa, needs to take responsibility for that

I think people are being a bit harsh on Perez. He obviously squandered two great chances, but he created them both himself, which is more than could be said for murphy, gouffran etc

    Well that was dissapointing!
First time this season that I’ve thought we might not go up.
No intensity no intent no communication.
QPR were there to be taken but as is becoming the norm we sit back and play this awful slow sideways shite.

    For what it’s worth –
Darlow – 5 little to do but dropped an easy ball early on
Yedlin -7 Ok game gets up pitch well.
Dummett 7 2 great attacking balls early on
Clark 7 good game spoilt with poor own goal
Lascelles 4 dreadful. Mistake waiting to happen . needs to be dropped
Gouff 6 looked better when up top but was making good runs all night and not picked out once . not his fault
Ritchie 6 looked slow until his goal. A booking waiting to happen!
Shelvey 6 some good some bad. But so little around him moving for him to pass to
Haydon 6 had a good game getting up pitch but final ball or shot poor
    Perez 3 please leave
Murphy 5 did nothing of note.

If this is the football that Rafa wants to play – containment and swift breaks (that’s my guess at what it is supposed to be) then we aren’t delivering against it.

Yes we are top 2 but should be clear at top with this squad. It isn’t working and if Rafa can’t make this squad play with intensity then I am afraid we need to find someone who can.

Perez became petulant and allowed his emotions to get the better of him after a telling of from Richie, If he had used the ball wisely we would have most likely won the game.

He still has some growing up to do in my opinion, and when on the field just get on and do his job.

    just got in from match
best team for the first minute from then on second best first half got pulled all over the pitch could of been 3 or 4 down at half time not for two last minute tackles by Dummet and one from
Shelvey plus a couple of excellent blocks saves from Darlow.

Could of should of won it second half but again missed chances don’t gamble to get players in the box – far to cautious

Toon one dimensional team to F***in slow and ponderous lost all confidence and look for Shelvey to do everything so he drops deep to pick up the ball from Lascalles who was SHIT and Clark. Players don’t run past players or bust a gut to make runs.

Opposition have got us sussed let us have the ball passing sideways then advance on us waiting for the miss pass then attack at pace with numbers leaving us clueless on who to pick up

Second half started same great block save by Darlow after Dummett gave the ball away.

Merit marks for all its worth

Darlow 6 my Man of the Match for his saves first half and beginning of second – could of been at fault for their second goal
Yedlin 5 Good going forward poor defensively
Lascalles 1 for putting on the strip – give the ball away time after time very hesitant
Clark 3 poor again two much sideways and backwards
Dummett 5 pick of our defenders for his defensive blocks – got away with howler second half
Ritchie 5 got up well for his headed goal apart from that poor
Goufran 3 stinker until pushed up front
Hayden 2 and one of them was for his cross for the second goal. Poor most of the game runs as if he has a fifty pence bit stuck up his arse – kept getting caught in possession gave the ball away all to often
Shelvey 6 good goal but played far to deep as a third centre half
Perez 2 hopeless and when he did get through one on one took the wrong option
Murphy 3 looked like a old man tonight slow and ponderous lacked any movement

Sammi 4 tried but after getting flattened disappeared to play full back for some reason
Diame 2 too late of a introduction

RAFA 3 for me one dimensional manager like his team doesn’t seem to know how to change the teams tactics, style of play
If Rafa had been McClaren Carver or Pardew the fans would of been shouting for his head

If we play like that against Derby – we’ll get stuffed

Supposed to be the best team – best squad – far from it.
    WE WERE POOR

The Gallowgate was like a morgue. Maybe the early goal just killed it? Poor first half, Dummett saved us twice.
Second half we had so many chances to kill and even missed one after our disastrous own goal.
    Perez was the main culprit.
But this really is a kick in the teeth/up the ‘arris!

Actually Perez had a decent game and got a decent reaction when subbed. Yes he shot for goal when in hindsight a pass to Ritchie would be better, but I’m sure any forward would shoot. For the second his ears were still burning from being told off when Ritchie was waving his arm for Perez to cross, even though we had two players in the box, and a shot was still on.

As for the rest of his play, he pulled off better tricks, made more chances than most and his passing was better than most s well, plus he did make the chances himself. I don’t think he’s great by any means but it’s clear some of you can’t see properly through the tears as you cry and bubble about drawing with qpr in a crap match with more dodgy officiating.

Every time we drop points at home to some no marks I think we will have learnt our lesson and will play with intensity and swagger and simply overwhelm teams but we just go out and do the same thing time after time.
Can the team and manager change it?
    I’m beginning to doubt it.

More of the same against Derby and we will be taken apart. Perhaps then the penny will drop. But I hope it already has

Our team lacked any energy last night until the shelvey incident and our second, we were much better in 2nd half but that was way off what we are capable of, everyone was guilty of giving the ball away, there was no pressing and no energy moving the ball forward.
Holloway had us nailed from the start, even though we scored very early, they were the better team ,quicker moving the ball, energetic attacks from more than one player and we had perez and hayden just putting their hands up if anyone tackled them.
But we dont have competition for places cos nobody was brought in, Samiobi was ok when he came on, better than Gouffy and Hayden but im not sure why we took off murphy for him, hes the one who would have benefited most from the crosses Sammi can put in”……….altogether a poor game

I said at the start of the season that this was a squad built for purpose, not pl quality but to get us promoted. I also predicted we would qualify in second place.

I also said that whatever Rafa was promised this would still be Ashley and Charnley driving the bus, and ready to revert to their book-balancing nonsense at any time, and liable to derail our progress with their lack of foresight at a moments notice.

The January window looks to me like this is where we may be heading. Despite all the talk of “expensive squad” it patently isn’t, it was bought with the sales of lazy journeymen, operates on a much lower wage bill, and crunches the numbers to Ashley’s corporate model.

Just accept that Benitez is working with the tools given and that if he starts playing risk with the tactics to please the fans we will drop into playoff places real quick. Be glad it’s what it is. Because I doubt we will like it in the PL.

I can’t understand when Gayle is playing we put high balls into the box and when Murphy plays we play balls for him to chase – surely it should be the other way around?
