Great Rafa Interview – If We’re Promoted We’ll All Be Heroes

Rafa has made some statements last night after the game, when he was off camera and interviewed by the local media – and some of those comments have been published in the Chronicle today.

There are statements he made on camera – that we’ve already seen – and then when he was off camera with the local reporters.

There’s one set of comments he made that caught our attention – when Rafa talks about being promoted and what it will mean for his players.

Rafa Benitez – last night against QPR on the touchline

So just on the off-chance the players didn’t realize they will become heroes at Newcastle if we do get promoted – this is what Rafa has said – and of course he’s spot on.

He was asked if this week had been the worst of the season so far for him – this is how he answered that:

“I think that it’s a long season so hopefully if that is the worst it means that the others will be better.”

“What we have to do now and I want to be clear also is that we stick together, so we have the fans, they have to realize they need to support the team, they have to be behind the team.”

“The players, they have to realise that the style of play that we have, they can be very important players for this club, so if we are promoted to the Premier League, they will be there.”

“They will famous, they will be heroes, they will be very important, so stick together, work hard together and see if we can achieve what we want to achieve.”

Those are great words from Rafa!

Of course not only will the players will be famous but a certain Rafa Benitez will be loved even more by the fans than he is today, because he’s the captain of the ship – he’s the manager.

But first of all we have to get promoted and for that we all have to stick together and pull in the same direction.

We have to support Rafa and all the players – even those who haven’t been playing well – and if we do that we can all be heroes.

Howay The Lads!!

For those who haven’t heard it here’s David Bowie’s “We can be Heroes” – a terrific song.

The curse of the Toon might also afflict even Rafa. Possibly no promotion and he will be off. No signings when a couple of quality are needed to ensure promo. Nothing changes under Ashley who is gambling again. Rafa gone and ASHLEY OUT.
It may not be so bad that we stay in the Championship. At least we win matches. We have two quality players: Shelvey and Ritchie. Gayle is decent if provided with chances. Darlow is decent. The rest are average players who might get a game for Boro or Leeds. But we would be in a relegation fight because the fat man will not put his hand in his pocket. Dummett and Perez are shocking who would struggle to get a game at Hartlepool. A pretty rank average team really of grinders.

I am fully behind the team, and if I wasn’t in the states would be at every game backing every player wearing black and white. Saw in the Chronicle today that we are exactly on the same number of points and the same number of points ahead of third with a game in hand as we were in 2009/10. No reason to panic at all especially with Gayle on his way back. I sense Rafa’s frustration like many, but I am confident that he and the players will put their efforts into promotion 100% and we will get there. I am also optimistic that after promotion Rafa will have a sit down with Ashley and straighten out the transfer issues. Disappointed we didn’t make any signings, but this team should still go up and the future is still going to be bright..

There’s so much pressure on our players they can’t really handle it, our work rate slumps and the fans desperation spills onto the pitch. Our defence is so shaky atm it’s unbelievable. Rafa needs to steady the ship but without Gayle we’ll miss his pace and cutting edge.

Ashley’s really ballsed up by not supporting Rafa this window. For the sake of wanting Carr more involved with transfers and not spending say £20m he risks losing out on a potential £150m from the Prem.

But we’ve seen it all before and it’s clear he’ll never change.

Best squad in the championship so don’t see how Ashley has messed anything up, Diame is back, Mbemba also and last game atsu will miss.

If we can’t go up with what we’ve got then Rafa is the only person to blame. I don’t think qpr had anyone who could have slotted into our starting xi yesterday, they just worked harder. We sat back and didn’t press at all, thought we’d won the game when we scored and couldn’t get out of that mentality

Agree with Our Toon. I think the glaring weakness we have is creativity, but lots of teams in this division are weak in that category. I thought our only hope was to grab a player like Loftus from Chelsea n loan. We weren’t going to get a Snodgrass or Sigurdsson in January, or a like player from a promotion rival. At best we would either have gotten a young, unproven player, or a foreign player who might need time to bed in to the English game. The squad we have should get promoted and then in the summer and then we’ll be able to seriously upgrade.

The negativity is ridiculous, so what we didn’t get Townsend in, on his current form he wouldn’t even get in the team anyway, he might have gotten on last night instead of Sammy for 20mins. We DREW a game after playing badly for about 60mins. We’re still 2nd in the league with a game in hand over 3rd. We’re still favourites to win the Championship, everyone on here thinking that not signing anyone was to do with Ashley or Carr is away with the fairies. Charnley is in charge of getting players signed

Only NUFC can trip themselves up at the finishing line. For the sake of £20M FatAsh gambles on the current squad whilst the rest strengthens – even the new faces at QPR have injected some new optimism judging by last nights performance. The pack are catching up and we hit the buffers – teams know to wind up / man mark Shelvey, pressurise the back four – our front 1 / 3 are not even worth marking!!
    Anyway some good news
    1) Championship football is on one provider (Sky)
    2) NowTV is pay per game
    3) goals from all games are available on line after the game
    4) Fatash looses money 🙂

I would doubt with his planned takeover of the fashion chain FCUK (French Connection ) plus the clearing out of the Polish scumbags operating the exploitation scheme at Shirebrook that Ashley has even been aware of the transfer window.

Schoolboy error for first QPR goal. Dummett left his man to ball watch. Except it’s not just a schoolboy error. It happens all too often with professional footballers.

    Black’nwhite,

It might just be that Ashley wouldn’t be too fussed if we missed out on promotion this season.
OK he would miss out on the big premiership pay out, but to compete in the PL he would have to put most of that back into improving the team, and even then we’d be struggling to make any sort of serious impact.
A team up the top of the championship with the prospect of going up would keep the supporters off his back and wouldn’t risk the sort of negative publicity he has had in recent seasons.
One thing is certain, he wouldn’t be concerned because he’s a supporter, because he isn’t one.

with the exception of Sels i don’t think there’s a player Rafa has bought that we will lose money on
but the next step is just one step to far for a lot of them
if we do go up there’s some serious rebuilding to do

I wouldn’t say it was/is the squad it is the intensity/passion we play at…
Slow slow bloody slow – sideways backwards.

We score then sit back and let teams come at us – don’t close down the opposition.

And teams have us sussed – close us down – bully us off the ball then we go to pieces – no movement and worst of all our passing/giving the ball away last night was shocking.

And we don’t seem to have a plan B

Week in week out same team same set up home or away good teams – bad teams.

Just wish RAFA would change it at times – maybe go 3 at the back or two up front

I don’t know 100% percent what will happen of course, but assuming we do get promoted I see two things happening.

    1. Ashley will not want to lose Rafa and will give him a fair amount to spend. Not sure what that will be, but something acceptable to Rafa.

    2. In the summer proven PL quality players will be easier to bring in for reasons that we all know.

So yes, I am still optimistic going forward. Could it all crash and burn? Sure, but I think in the end Ashley will do the right thing and give Rafa the control he wants/needs.

Our dip in form lately has nothing to do with needing new signings, although the right player can help strengthen.
We supposed to have the strongest squad in the championship, although when cirtain key players are missing we soon look at very average side. Gayle is a massive miss but our work rate is poor, we’re not capable of 90 minutes of quality. Usually 30 to 40 mins max.
Our players need to get there actually together or is Rafa partly to blame?
Personally I think it’s pressure from fans they can’t handle.

The fans might want to take note of Rafa’s second paragraph:
“What we have to do now and I want to be clear also is that we stick together, so we have the fans, they have to realize they need to support the team, they have to be behind the team.”
Outsung all night by QPR. NUFC fans only vocal in a positive way when scoring, otherwise only vocal to berate individual players. Hardly encouraging. Hardly surprising away form is better.

toonkk…… I agree with you about the players being affected by the expectation and tension inside SJP. I was at the game last night and the atmosphere wasn’t relaxed at all. This must transmit to the pitch and be part of the reason for slow, deliberate passing and over cautious play.

Well I keep seeing the 100 million number thrown about. Not sure if that’s what’s really needed or not. Of course I would love to see that amount be made available. However, if Rafa is happy with 80 million for example I’m fine with that. Basically I want Ashley to give Rafa what he thinks he needs for the transfer window. I am hesitant to just say 100 million because I don’t know what number Rafa will be asking for.
