Here’s Rafa’s Expected Team For Derby County – Two Changes

Rafa Benitez has most of the players fit for tomorrow’s game with Derby County and for the purposes of team selection we will assume Jack Colback is fit to play, but that Dwight Gayle and of course Rolando Aarons are not fit.

We will also assume Christian Atsu is not ready to play after just returning from the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana.

It’s another important game for Newcastle, after we threw away 2 points on Wednesday night in the last minute of that game with QPR with a Ciaran Clark own goal.

Here’s a team we think Rafa can start tomorrow afternoon at St. James’ Park against former manager Steve McClaren’s side:

Darlow
Yedlin Lascelles (c) Clark Dummett
Shelvey Colback
Ritchie Diame Gouffran|
Murphy

That’s two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with QPR on Wednesday night in a poor performance – especially in that first half.

In comes Jack Colback for Isaac Hayden and also Mo Diame for the ineffective Ayoze Perez.

It would be good to get a clean sheet tomorrow too.

What would your team be for the game tomorrow?

Fans are not too confident of a win tomorrow.

Giving Perez a rest would definitely be sound.

I wasn’t against Townsend coming but I did think it wasn’t an essential.

For the fee quoted I think we did smart.

Even fat Freddie said he wouldn’t do the deal and he did some crazy deals.

Just hope that Ashley can do the right thing in the summer and backs the manager.

Even if Ashley wanted his £30m back there is still money to spend.

Don’t drop Yedlin but move him from the back four
Therein lie most of our errors
    Even the soft Clark goal
    Lualua was under no pressure

We were very unlucky with that goal.

The ball wasn’t actually that dangerous but it was poor communication and Clark shouldn’t have gone for the header with the trajectory of the ball. It was an awkward ball to head forward to clear of backwards out of play.

    Clark looked so upset.

    Bobby on a side note
I don’t know how good your view is – but in the first half against QPR Goofy came back to help out the back four several times and did some heart stopping passes across our box !

Jib, Aye, I know. Scary stuff. He might decide to give Sammy a start on Saturday. I wouldn’t be against that myself. We need someone who’s prepared to take people on after all. When he’s good he’s good…

The own goal was our (excellent) young keeper’s mistake. We all know what happens when keepers make a mistake,

For the own goal Darlow should of called it and Clark should of done far better with the header…Shelvey shouldn’t of let the cross in either tbf

It happened shame but not a huge worry

We need to use the pace we have in the squad. Imagine a line up like this:

    Darlow

Sterry – Lascelles – Clark -Dummett

    Shelvey – Diame

    Yedlin – Ritchie – Lazaar

    Mitro

    🙂

I’ve got a good view of the goal from my seat and Tbf to Clark, I didn’t see Darlow shout, unless he’s a ventriloquist. Not saying he didn’t though, I might just as easily missed that bit. It was just another individual mistake on a night littered with them. We usually bounce back after a dodgy performance and and we need to do so tomorrow. God help us if we don’t. The pundits will love it if McClaren gets one over on us, because most of them love us to fail. They just don’t get us at all. Knowing their teams wouldn’t sell out the ground in the Championship seems to irk them somewhat. That said, we really need to up the noise a lot. I honestly can’t believe how quiet 52k can be.
Anyway, Mrs Bee is calling me for my scran so I’ll love you and leave you. Great craic again. Shows how you can disagree without being nasty to each other and THAT is how a blog should be. 10/10 today. Gonna watch the game on my phone coz wor lass’s mate is coming round and it’ll be wall to wall soaps. 🙁 Enjoy the evening.

I think Goofy dropped into defence when Clarke went off for stitches. Lesson for Rafa; keep Goofy out of defence apart from tracking back.

Pretty sure I just read Colback is not available so I think we’ll see the same starting 11 from last game except Diame starting for Perez. Perhaps next year Yedlin will play some wing. I think that might be his best position. He looks much more natural to me going forward than defending.

Regarding the Clark on-goal I wonder how much his injury – knock to the head and cut on the eyelid/brow – impacted the attempted header. Darlow still should have called him off but the injury might have lead clark to misjudge the ball’s flight. I actually thought Clark should have been subbed out for Hanley, or lazaar in on the left with Dummett moving to cover for clark. Anyway, bad luck either way.

This is not for Bingo just something that I would like to see tried:

    Darlow
    Lascelles – Clark – Dummett
    Mbemba
    Yedlin – Diame – Shelvey – Atsu
    Mitro – Gayle

Ritchie can some in for Atsu or Yedlin.

I like that we have two left footed CB’s (counting Dummett as a cb). This is also why I think Clark gets so much playing time to balance the CB pair. And to be fair he has mostly done a good job. Anyway, I’d like to see this tried sometime down the road when everyone is back and fit.

Glad you mentioned Clark’s own goal. The lad had suffered quite a knock to his head, had stiches in the resultant cut and played on.

I think we could excuse the mishap under the circumstances as it was said to have been quite a bump between the two of them.

Now if the twelfth man were to gee the lads on for 90 minutes, even when they’re on the defensive, it’d make a helluva difference. Those nervous silences must be unsettling for the lads.

lesh – it also was very difficult for them to stop the bleeding and I think when a team sees that kind of injury it takes some of the wind out of their sails. Plus you then had Clark going on and off the pitch several times making us play with 10 men for extended periods and this certainly also helped to disrupt the momentum in the game. No excuses for the multiple times our players _hayden, Shelvey, Lascelles were caught dawdling on the ball.

Perez sprung the offside trap to great effect against QPR. A lot of people were complaining on his first chance that he could have squared it, but he had 2 runners waiting to pick up the pass to Ritchie. He tried to put it through the keepers legs, it didn’t work, but it wasn’t as bad as some people were making out.

Perez was liking up great with Mitrovic in the Oxford game as well. I think his game is improving; although his finishing and decision making at times needs further improvement.
