Newcastle Back On Top After Hard Fought Win Over Derby

If we are to get promoted we must win a lot of our games before the end of the season and to do that Rafa says we have to play well and if we don’t play well we still have to somehow win the game.

We did not play well in the second half today after Isaac Hayden went off injured and that last 20 minutes was nerve racking as Derby went for the equalizer – but we missed a number of gilt edged opportunities – again.

But unlike Wednesday night against QPR when we let in a goal in the last minute, we hung on this afternoon to get what was a vital win and the result was always going to be more important that the performance.

It puts us top of the Championship again with 62 points from 29 games and Reading could only draw 2-2 at Ipswich today, so we picked up 2 points on them today.

So we go 6 points ahead of the 3rd placed side with a much superior goal difference and a game in hand.

Rafa Benitez on the touchline this afternoon

Rafa will also be very pleased with the clean sheet and the back four today were very good and we expect big Grant Hanley to keep his place in the next game – he has vast experience of the Championship.

And Brighton will have to win their game at Brentford tomorrow to go back on top and they will be without classy center-back Lewis Dunk.

Dunk was sent off on Thursday in the 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield and will miss this game through suspension.

It was an ugly win today – just what we needed?

Maybe against Wolves next week we will play well in both halves.

Reread what you wrote. I’m guessing you had a couple Jim Beams, especially in those last ten minutes!

    Kidding, good work man.

Yedling was by far our best player today, but i will give a special mention to Mitro, for me he had an excellent game today and was let down by our MF, esp Diame, yes Mitro should have scored but when tthey used him his hold up play was good, his little lay offs worked well, players like Diame were just shooting from silly distances. Mitro needs someone the ball played up to him, or good crosses which we didnt do enough of, we have been playing as if Gayle is still up front, long shots that he can feed off the scraps.

a win is a win, and we are back top, thats the main thing.

Thought Mitro’s link up play was very good today. We needed to get more men around him and running beyond him to give him options. His finishing needs work but I still love watching him play. We’ve missed Gayle’s finishing so much. I find it strange given the way Rafa likes to play he didn’t buy another mobile striker over say Murphy. But perhaps he thought Perez could fill that role. I wonder if we have any youngsters in loan who are quick, mobile and good in front of goal?! ?

Mitrovic did miss a difficult chance, but assisted on Ritchie’s goal and setup numerous chances for others: a couple chances by Diame, one by Hayden and another by Ritchie. The goals will come for him, but he IS struggling to score right now. But he is playing well otherwise…

We are not a disgrace and the result was not embarrassing, Derby have been on a great run of form going from relegation candidates to play off hopefuls. YOU are disgrace and it is embarrassing to have someone like you claim to be a fan of our club!

Well done to the lads today! We must keep Rafa – best thing since Sir Bobby.

We were willing to keep Pardew for 4 years so we should keep Rafa for double that and we would be top 4 by then as well I’m sure.

For now – anyone have an idea of what approximate points total do we need to aim for to secure an automatic promotion place?

    Van Toon Man,
I can’t remember off the top of my head but Brighton would have been promoted pretty much every season with what they got last season.
