Development manager Peter Beardsley has revealed how good Rafa Benitez has been to all the coaching staff at Newcastle who are involved with him at Benton.
Peter has talked about how accessible the Newcastle manager is and how if we lose a game he never gets upset, but looks to the next game to what he can learn from why we lost – and put that right.
We’ve noticed with Rafa how whether we have won, lost of drawn a game he sums up immediately after the game what we did well – how the game went – and what we didn’t do well.
Peter Beardsley and Rafa Benitez
Rafa never makes excuses, but it’s always down to something we didn’t do and should have done – and the team and himself are always responsible for the result – whatever it is.
It’s hard to ever be a victim when you approach things in that way.
Peter Beardsley seems to be in awe of the gaffer as he had this to say to the Chronicle today:
“I have worked with some of the best managers, but his manner and little things he does around the place – you just think: ‘WOW!’”
“They are so simple yet so clever.” “It’s a pleasure for us to be around him.”
“Absolutely, without a doubt he brings back memories of Kevin and Sir Bobby.”
“The big thing for me is for all of them, Sir Bobby, Kevin and the gaffer – they absolutely love this game.”
“This is their life so for Rafa it’s 24 hours a day, whether he’s watching a game, watching the U-23s or the first team – it’s his life.”
“What he does for this city and this club is incredible.”
“I’m a massive fan too and obsessed, but I’m now calm because of what I see.” “And it’s because of him and because I love him so much because of what he does.”
“He couldn’t be better.”
“I talk to him about how calm he is.” “But why get upset or annoyed if we lose games?” “We can’t change the past but we can change the future.”
“If there’s anything we need we just have to knock on his door.” “We can ask him a question, text him, ring him or whatever.”
“The big thing for me is he treats everybody the same.” “With all due respect it doesn’t matter if you are a cleaner or kitchen porter, whoever you are, we’re all treated the same but in a positive way.”
“It’s fantastic.” “He is the person that I see being so calm through everything that is going on.”
Mike Ashley would have to be an utter and complete fool to ever think of Rafa leaving Newcastle while he is the owner.
We can assure you that Mike Ashley is not an utter and complete fool.
So relax.

Comment #42I hope we do spend 100M pounds but why do we HAVE to to survive in the PL, did Watford, Bournemouth, Soton or Swansea?

In the summer mate the prices of players will be impacted by the tv money so we will have to spend more than they did when they got promotion but I dont think we’d need to spend that much with Rafa but without him we could need more than 100mill
As for Gouffran if hes still turning out for us in the PL I will be disappointed…in fact theres a few names I could throw in there

When you get stupid prices like £20m prices quoted for the likes of McCarthy and £15m for the likes of Townsend, ordinary players to say the least, then £100 million is a drop in the ocean these days.
However, he likes of Keane from Burnley, Shaw from Man utd, Gray from Leicester, Hughes from Derby, Wilson from Bournemouth and Atsu from Chelsea, whilst overpriced, would certainly enhance our current squad.

How many of our present team do you reckon would thrive in the PL. ?
I’d say Shelvey, Darlow/Elliott, Yedlin, Hayden, Gayle.
That makes six plus back ups needed. It’s got to be around 100mill. at today’s prices.

Comment #50100 million is a fairly unlikely spend for a promoted club. If that is the case clubs like Brighton, Reading and Huddersfield would then have no chance. The gulf isn’t that great between the top six in the Championship and bottom half of the epl. Its the gulf between the top 8 and the rest that is substantial.

We want to do more than scrap around in the bottom half of the PL otherwise forget about any talk of winning cups for another season.
For a comfortable top half position we’ll need to acquire some serious talent.
Surely the extra cash from promotion to the PL would be used to fund the sort of outlay we’ll need ?

A club our size shoukd be in the top 8 and whilst I would expect the club to back the manager with significant funds to achieve that in the next 3 years.
In the current financial climate in the game, transfer fees have been hugely inflated due to recent television deals.
If we are to achieve top 8, we will need to do it by spending big and local (our overseas policy of buying has largely failed) as well as developing our own kids and giving them a chance.
As for the current squad being EPL qualified, most of them are as shown by their performances under Rafa in those last 6 games of last season but at what level is open to debate.

Comment #54Mag my post @52 outlines what I think can realistically happen, but the big “if” of course is whether Ashley will do right. 8th, 9th or 10th is realistic without that most unlikely 100 mill spend. I think it’s very possible to do it first year back with the more realistic 70 to 80 spend, but only if Rafa stays.

Comment #55I think our policy of buying abroad only failed because of a reluctance to push the boat out a bit further, and certainly that needs to change. But buying local will only get you modest players at inflated prices. Carr may need to go, but I think the policy of buying abroad needs to stay.

Comment #57I am optimistic that if we are promoted Rafa has kept saying it’s a project, some of our signings have said the same that Rafa is building something long term and they wanted to be part of it.
Now to have this thought process Rafa must have assurances that money WILL be available.
Now the only slight spanner is Ashley and he hasn’t always come up with promises, ask KK.

Beardsly’s singing Rafa’s praises and that can’t do his cause any harm. Mind, he was also singing Ashley’ a few years ago! Nevertheless,
It’s all good PR for Rafa and it’d have to be a fool of the highest order who’d upset the applecart!
