Former Striker Speaks Well Of Newcastle

32 year-old Oba Martins is currently playing for China Super League club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, after joining Newcastle from Inter-Milan in 2006 and then leaving us for Wolfsburg after three years at Newcastle.

He’s got himself around quite a bit since then, having also played in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders from 2013-2015, before moving to Shanghai last year.

While in Seattle he scored 43 goals in 83 total appearances and since he moved to China he’s scored 15 goals in 31 appearances for them – so he’s still scoring the goals and earning the money.

Oba Martins while at Newcastle – yes he just scored

At Newcastle he scored 35 goals in 104 appearances.

And while in the US he seems to have had a big influence on DeAndre Yedlin as the Newcastle right-back has had this to say to ChronicleLive:

“I spoke to Obafemi Martins before I made the move to Newcastle,”

“He actually spoke to me a bit about Newcastle before I even came over to Europe.

“Oba was speaking about how much he enjoyed it here at this club, so Newcastle were always in the back of my head.”

“He was the one who really looked after me when I was in Seattle so it’s cool that we both have this connection now.”

“We have full belief in what we are doing.”

“Just about every team in just about every season will go through a little bit of a rough patch.”

“I just think that’s what we’ve been going through recently.”

“I think we’re re-finding momentum soon and then we’ll move on like we were before we hit this little patch.”

“We know we have the capability to do it, we won so many games during the first half of the season and we beat most teams.”

“So we know we can do it and it’s just making sure we get back to winning ways.”

With Vurnon Anita still recovering from his ankle injury, DeAndre has been playing regularly for the team and the American has been playing extremely well and is a better player now than when he agreed to join Rafa Benitez last summer.

DeAndre saved Newcastle 2 points against Derby when he brilliantly headed off the line with only seconds of stoppage time to play on Saturday, as his defensive play continues to improve.

He’s been an excellent signing for Newcastle.

I guess the on going question until the end of the season will be, what to do about Elliot?

Lets hope he does not turn into another Tiote.

On article – presumably St. James Park is a very unique and rewarding place to ply your trade.
