That was our 21st win in 30 Championship games – so that’s a 70% win rate – which is not too bad.
It wasn’t an easy game this afternoon but once again a battle-hardened Newcastle managed to get all 3 points thanks to some very good defending today.
And Rafa will be pleased with a second clean sheet and a second 1-0 win and giving Jamaal a rest last week did wonders – he had an excellent game today.
Jamaal Lascelles – excellent captain’s game today
I am so pleased our captain @Lascelles16 got man of the match today. He’s my favourite of our squad. Love him! #NUFC

People slate Mitro but he set up the only goal last week and scored the only goal today. He’s doing his job and doing it well #NUFC

I’m not denying that but when he’s back, we’re not suddenly going to just start playing better. We’ve had a number of games this year where gayle has played and we’ve had similar performances as today.

We haven’t had Gayle and Shelvey in the same team since before Christmas and Gayle offers far more of an outlet up top

Comment #4Don’t care about his goal, the lad is a liability, if Napoli want to pay 13M snap their hands off.

Comment #5We’ve been winning without Gayle. Undoubtedly he’ll come back in when fit, but not necessarily to lead the line. That of course would marginalise both Mitro and Murphy once again. Two valuable players in the run in that Rafa might like to see playing.

Again I’m not disagreeing but we have had similar performances to today when gayle and Shelvey played haven’t we? I’m not including defeats but Bristol and Rotherham game spring to mind.

Comment #7I’m not wanting to be argumentative. I’m just saying that because gayle will be back doesn’t mean we will suddenly start playing much better. We’ve had games similar to today and I’m mindful of that.

Comment #8Happy with the result. A nervy 2nd half. A big question for me though is have we lost all confidence in our back 4 and midfield to play the ball out from the back? I believe that Darlow was capable of playing the ball at least competently with is feet but now whenever the ball goes back to him at his feet, he tries to one time kick it on the roll, he never takes a touch for control anymore and then look for his outlet OR he just falls on it, gets up and punts it long. Rarely looks for a throw or roll out. We constantly gave the ball back to the other side. This has been going on for multiple games now. I don’t have a problem when clearing because you are under pressure but this is not a confidence building trait in the team at the moment and god awful to watch. You can see exactly the other team is going to win the ball from the hit and hope. But as I said happy with the result and we had a our good moments too. Just frustrated by this lack of confidence and footballing at the back.

When Gayles for he will replace Mitro/Murphy he’s our main striker with 20 goals to his name why would he sit behind two lads who dont impact a game like he does?
ronaldo
Aye true but there’s more chance of playing well when we have our first 11 on the field surely? Am not sure of it point tbh mate?

Comment #10Well the biggest reason that I think Gayle might be brought back in as a number 10 is that the addition of his goals and movement as well as a goalscorer and target man might well improve us, the other is that it allows us to make better use of the squad, that has been winning in his absence.

Comment #11The refs in this league are not good; Mitro got booked for nothing early on and then he was under pressure and Rafa rightly took him off at half time as he had no chance of finishing the game.
