After defending so well on Saturday at Wolves Newcastle looked very poor in the first half defensively against Norwich last night.
We paid for it conceding two soft goals in the first 17 minutes to allow the home side to take a 2-1 lead after Ayoze Perez had put us ahead after only 23 seconds of the game with a good goal.
But Newcastle showed character and spirit to come back in this game and after hitting the woodwork twice and some chances being missed (again!) captain Jamaal Lascelles hit home the equalizer after 81 minutes to get a good point.
Rafa Benitez – on the touchline at Norwich last night
But Newcastle must be more consistent in their defending and poor Karl Darlow committed an embarrassing mistake on 17 minutes when he air kicked the ball and Jerome took the gift to put Norwich ahead.
Brighton were held to a 1-1 by Ipswich Town, but both Huddersfield and Reading won and are closing in on us.
But Rafa Benitez was upbeat after the game as he had this to say as reported in the Chronicle:
“If we get four points every two games – we will be up.”
“If we can create chances and get a point you have to be happy.”
“We gave them belief they could get a result.”
“The way the players responded in the second half though was brilliant. I told them to forget about the mistakes.”
Here’s the top of the Championship and it’s getting closer at the top.
