Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Appelt Pires (Gabriel) joined Spanish club Leganes from Juventus last August, having spent the previous season on loan there.
And we had a number of reports in late January that Newcastle had approached his club inquiring about a potential transfer of the player.
The news we reported was that Newcastle had made an offer for the 6ft 1ins tall midfielder and the Spanish club, based in Madrid, were considering it – that was on January 27th.

Today Gabriel has been interviewed in the Spanish news agency EFE and he was asked if Newcastle had been interested in him.
This is what he said:
“Yes, I think it was true.” “But it’s gone and now I think of here, where I am and where I am going to be.”
“It was a club subject – I was training and it happened.” “The club decided it that I would stay and that was it.”
“My future depends on many things.” “I don’t want to think about that now.
That could be accurate as far as we can tell from our records.
Gabriel has scored two goals and one assist in 22 appearances for Leganes this season and his contract still has 28 months to run until the end of June 2019.
In total he has played 62 games for Leganes with 10 goals and 5 assists, with his club now in 17th place on 18 points in La Liga – 4th bottom.
Maybe he could be a target for the summer?
What do you think?
