Every goalkeeper makes mistakes – whoever they are – and we’ve seen some howlers made by some of the best goalkeepers in the world – it’s just something that happens and the best goalkeepers put it behind them and quickly too.
There were some good comments from Newcastle goalkeeping coach Simon Smith on how the goalkeepers need to handle mistakes and of course he was right.
And Rafa Benitez is always supportive of his players so it would be a big shock if Karl doesn’t stay in goal for Newcastle – at least in the near future.
Karl Darlow – will stay in goal for Newcastle
Of course he needs to get back to playing the good consistent play we have seen from him for the vast amount of this season and last – when he was in the first team.
Karl is improving as a goalkeeper and he could even have surprised Benitez at how well he has been playing.
Certainly his attitude and temperament are first class and it was good to see how the traveling fans tried to lift him after his terrible error on Tuesday night.
If he is in goal at home against Aston Villa, then he will get good backing from the fans when he starts the game.
Obviously the fans want him to do well and will not put any extra pressure on the 26 year-old – who is a popular player at Newcastle.
Rob Elliot of course is pushing hard and will want to get his place back as soon as possible but Karl is the man in possession.
It’s up to him to put that mistake in the last game behind him and turn in another set of competent performances in the upcoming games.
Now is not the time to change the goalkeeper at Newcastle.
What do you think?

Comment #41Well put it this way, I am willing to sign over full conjugal rights of access to my wife to Lord Rafa. That’s if she ever comes back from San Lorenzo.
(Disclaimer: I am not married, but it can be hastily arranged if Rafa so desires)

He hasn’t done more than any other manager would be expected to?
He’s rebuilt a club and has us flying in the league and took us on a cup run. If the league hasn’t been oddly compact (most other seasons Huddersfield would be top with their current points total) then we would be comfortably ahead (though we already are comfortably ahead tbf)
Am not sure many other managers would of done the same job

Comment #43Also he hasn’t wasted money he’s just given us a squad. We’ve gone years without one so people have forgotten what it’s like

Comment #44Lazaar was not 7.5 mil, he was at around the 3 mil range.
Also, Hanley was not a waste. He was a much needed purchase. For the first time in ages we finally have cover. How many seasons have we played with only 3 Cbs in just Colo, Taylor, and Willo? That nonsense killed us.
Just because a signing doesn’t always play, that means that the people in front of them (usually) are playing well. They are improving squad competition- we’ve seen many times in the past where players can play poorly and know it won’t matter because there is no one else to come in and take their place.
While I agree that we are where we should be, I think we have done very well to assemble the squad that we did considering some of the ridiculous prices players are going for these days. Do I think they are all epl quality? Of course not, but for this season they do not need to be.
