Given how inept Lee Charnley has been over the last three years he has over this last year inadvertently become a key person at Newcastle.
Lee could become very important in keeping Rafa Benitez at the club and it’s obvious Rafa likes him and they share the same ideas of where to take the club.
Lee Charnley was always a very hard worker who did stellar work in the transfer market for the club and when he assumed the Managing Director role what seemed to let him down was his football knowledge.
Lee Charnley – Managing Director
Rafa Benitez has faith in this man
Lee appointed John Carver and then Steve McClaren as head coaches and they were disastrous appointments that finally led to us being relegated last season.
Lee was saved from the sack at the end of the season when it was obvious to everybody that he got on really well with Rafa Benitez and he did great work twice last year when he negotiated deals to keep Rafa at the club.
That shocked us all when Rafa arrives and when he stayed after we were relegated.
Not only that, but Rafa was adamant he wanted Lee to stay on as the top executive at the club, because he was very comfortable working with Lee.
Some of us even forgive Charnley for the mess he created because he got Rafa to the club and kept him at the club.
Mike Ashley deserves credit for that as well of course.
Rafa could well become one of the best managers in Newcastle’s 125 year history if we can keep him on board for a number of years.
And that assumes Mike Ashley doesn’t mess things up – as he has a bad habit of doing.
If Rafa is left alone to do his job – and there were worrying moves from Ashley in January that may not happen – Newcastle will be in great shape because he knows so much about football and managing a club.
It seems only Mike Ashley can mess this one up.
We hope Mike has learned from his past mistakes and now realizes he now has the perfect man in place on all football matters and an executive running the club who Rafa likes working with.
Leave the two of them alone to do the job – after all they did a fabulous job for the club last summer.
Let them do it again this summer – please!

Comment #2Reading the Sunday papers on the net this morning, just realised what a great pity that we never had Clattenberg or Olivier referee any of the TOON games. In saying that sorry for John Moss he supports the Makums…….
