It Was A Tough First Half – But Newcastle Back On Top

Newcastle did tonight what good teams do and when the lads were nowhere near their best in the first half, they hung in there and even went ahead after 42 minutes against the run of play through Yoan Gouffran.

It was the Frenchman’s 7th goal of the season and another important goal for Newcastle.

Sign this man up for another two years!

Yoan Gouffran scores vital first goal

Newcastle were improved after the break and  karma seems alive and well and came into effect when Henri Lansbury – the villain in Nottingham Forest’s 2-1 win when we were down to 9 men before the break because of his acting performance –  was kind enough to put the ball into his own net to give us a 2-0 lead.

That was after 59 minutes and Newcastle simply controlled the game for the last 30 minutes to get our 22nd win of the season in 32 games – that’s a 69% win rate in the league and we are 33 points above Aston Villa in the league.

Here’s what the league table looks like tonight.

Now we must beat Bristol City at home on Saturday – come hell or high water – and hopefully we’ll put in a better first half display than we did tonight.

It was a big win tonight.

Jesus is lascselles parachuting in on that pic!

I’m glad Colback and mitro showed Wat they actually do and get the plaudits for it they will both be back up to speed now hopefully after lengthy injuries and not playing

funny that lansbury looks like a total drunk hanging on to a lamp post after that goal! Karma indeed

    just in

Poor first half both teams were poor passes went astray no movement – creativity- actually the looked as if they lacked confidence.
First goal sloppy but it came as a great relief to all. second half there was only one team going to win.

    marks
Darlow 7 – did well great black second half to keep the score at 2-0
but rash charge out and dive at Hogans feet – sure ref was going to point to spot until seeing linesman flag for offside.
Dummett 9 – my Man of the Match defended like a trojan got in some great blocks and second half got forward a lot more.
Lascalles 6 – weak link in the defence – scored but very slow and ponderous on the ball looked as if he lacks confidence with what to do with the ball
Clark 7 – rock at the back played well and used the ball well.
Yedlin 7 – Another solid display but looked tired second half.
Goufran 6 – scored but little else backed out of numerous tackles tonight – not want we want to see
Colback 6 – poor first half second half a lot better and got/carried the ball forward. Mind you slow on the ball and gets caught in possession to often.
Shelvey 7 – Did OK but his radar was a tad off tonight with his long passes.
Ritchie 6 – Plenty of running but end product not the best.
Diame 6 – Poor first half excellent second half must of had a rocket up his arse at half time.
    Gayle 4 – didn’t looked fit.
Mitro 8 – Thought he had a good game when he came on chased everything battled well – held the ball up – linked up play and got back and defended to.
Atsu 5 – not on long enough but brilliant cross at the end pity no one gambled on getting in the box.

All – in – all not the best display but got the result we needed.

Crowd brilliant at start but went quite until Lansbury lifted the crowd with his own goal

Yeah Villa were very good in the first thirty, as were our back four. Clark and Lascelles are tremendously strong in the air, unplayable really, and Clark in particular is having a great season. It’s to be enjoyed though, because they will almost certainly find it harder against nippier, more gifted attackers should we go up. Colback was also very good, which is not a surprise given it was his third start since his absence and we can expect to see that from him game in game out for the rest of the campaign.

Commentators were saying how we were hardly creating anything in the first half – totally ignoring the fact that Villa were pressing hard and parking the bus.

These are the games we would have lost before Rafa came in but now we usually somehow find a way to win. And that is how you win silverware.

We tough it out when teams are pressing and playing defensive – then if we can break through that and score with our quality we bring on players like Atsu and try and hit them on the counter. Basic football tactics and they work. And if teams choose to attack us then we can use that space to attack right back and watch a brilliant game. It won’t always be pretty but winning is the priority. Good game lads.
