Newcastle Win 2-0 But Lose Gayle To Hamstring Again

It was a very poor display from Newcastle in the first half tonight as they started the game very poorly and misplaced pass after pass and it looks like Dwight Gayle may have come back too early from his hamstring problem.

He had to go off after only 33 minutes in the first half and it looks like it’s his hamstring that’s  gone again and that’s the very last thing we wanted to have happen.

Now we will be without Gayle for those consecutive away games at Brighton, Huddersfield and Reading starting next Tuesday night at Brighton.

Mitrovic celebrates after Yoan Gouffran scores first goal

It was a goal from Gouffran after 42 minutes, his 7th of the season and an improved performance from the home side in the second half when we went 2-0 up on 59 minutes after an own goal from Henri Lansbury.

But this win will pale if we are without Dwight Gayle for any length of time, after he was handed his first start since picking up the hamstring injury at Brentford.

Aleksandar Mitrovic came on in his place, but it was Villa who settled into the game a lot more quickly than Newcastle, who were struggling to get to grips early on.

As luck would have it we went ahead against the run of play just before half time when Gouffran scored from a corner after a scramble in the goalmouth.

After 58 minutes Henri Lansbury made up for his disgraceful acting performance for Nottingham Forest last year when he scored an own goal for us following a corner and Newcastle then had control of the game.

But it was a dodgy performance from Newcastle in that first half and Dwight has injured his hamstring and that’s got to be exactly what we didn’t want to happen.

The positive way to look at is that we didn’t play well but we found a way to win even after losing Gayle in the first half.

The results are more important than the performances these days and it’s another win – our 22nd in 32 games – and another clean sheet – that will give the lads confidence.

Oh – and we are top of the league again.

Exactly the same happened in Hoots fizzy pop season.

It was nip and tuck all the way until nearly the end of February , then the chasing pack started chopping each other to bits.

For me the best thing about promotion will be the standard of reffing.

We had players hacked down all over the park and Shelvey gets a yellow for sarcastically applauding the ref !!!!!!

Has it been confirmed that Gayle has had a recurrence? Or is Ed throwing out more click bait?

He looked off the pace and Villa were playing very deep so it could well have been a tactical move to bring on Mitro – as his presence very much changed the complexion of the game.

Benitez seemed vague when asked about Gayle. He said they were going to have to check on him, but he didn’t exactly say if Gayle came off because of an injury. If Gayle needs looked at, I would assume something was niggling him.

    Also
Mo Diamé was a Bruce signing at ‘ull City and he was pretty ineffective first half until AV were chasing the game.

On way home not sure how some choosing Gouff as MoM because he had a mare apart from goal. My pick would be Colback.

Pretty disappointing performance but another 3 points

Colback and Yedlin were good, CBs and Darlow good quality as per but overall not great. Two poor goals but atleast Lansbury showed his quality haha

    Gutted about Gayle

Colback MotM for me, followed by Ritchie in close second. Nothing complicated, just did his job. Would like to see him doing a bit more going forward, though.

Lascelles was man of match for me, apart from his yellow didn’t miss a thing in the air and solid defensively today especially in the first half when they were the better team,, also had a hand in both the goals

On my way home from the game….oh, so worth it for that Angela Landsbury OG! He was fcuking sh!te…couldn’t pass for sh!t and was clearly rattled by the crowd. Bit of a bad idea by Agent Bruce to play the soppy cnut.

Yedlin awesome again. Dummett ok first half and solid/attacking second half. Mitro bossed it.

Darlow back to his best. Their keeper is cack and will help cement their place in League 1.

    Crowd was unreal!

    Love it!!
