Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In Huge Win Against Villa?

After the game on BeIN sports in the US yesterday the commentator had a brief commentary on the game and said Newcastle were poor in the first half but came back in the second and got the job done.

He said it was a win that you get from Champions – so that was a compliment after Newcastle did not play at their best – especially in the first 40 minutes before Gouffran put us in the lead.

Then we all saw karma is alive and well when future Hollywood actor Henri Lansbury somehow managed to put the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 as he tried to stop a Jamaal Lascelles shot and it was game over.

Jonjo Shelvey and Rafa Benitez after the game

It was a big win for us and now we need another 3 points against Bristol City on Saturday and nothing can be taken for granted in that game.

Rafa said after the game that City create more chances than any other side in the division.

Those 2 pics – the banner going round the Gallowgate and Wor Henri clinging to that naughty post! Please can we add them to the banner above?

Just finished watching the game as I had to record it due to having visitors.

I seriously thought we were going to go down to ten men in the first half, as most of the decisions seemed to be going against us and I thought ‘oh no we’re not playing 12 men again. It was a struggle for us and it changed when Mitro came on. He had an immediate effect on the game and he didn’t look like a player who could get carded at any moment, more like his former no.9 Toon hero, tough but honest.

My MOM was Colback the unsung hero. I don’t see why he is classified as the side to side man, he got forward as much as anyone and nearly scored a good goal.

Yedlin, Ritchien Mitrovic and Shelvey were close to getting my vote and Darlow did exactly what he had to do when it was needed.

I know we collectively hate Lansbury but it was good to see Lascelles and Darlow shaking hands with him as old team mates, they were probably saying good goal mate. ?

As some one else said you had to shed a little tear of sympathy for Steve after the game, not. He looked like he’d been slapped with a frozen kipper. wouldn’t it be a shame if they got relegated? ?

Everyone has probably gone to bed by now or are slightly p!ssed after a great win, so having typed a screed will probably repost it a million times tomorrow.

I found it puzzling and frustrating watching Diame last night.

He was one of the tallest men on the pitch but won next to nowt in the air. Seemed to be jogging for most of the game and when he did get some speed up just ran into trouble.

I was wondering if we somehow had Sissoko back playing for us.

There were two good reason why Perez should have started instead, firstly I think our overall play would have flowed more and secondly I’d have won the bingo.

Dwight didn’t seem to be limping when he went off and I thought it might be tactical, but it does look it was a precautionary action. Turned out to be a good move as it happened.

    I don’t “do” wishful thinking.

    Only the facts bonnylad

“Lee Ryder ?@lee_ryder 10 hours ago

Dwight Gayle walking freely out of stadium. Says it will be assessed day by day. Rafa indicated it may not be too serious. #nufc”

then in a couple of days it won’t be mentioned.

    It was tactical

The mention of injury was face-saving

The game last night just didn’t suit Gayle’s style.

Colback for me, did all the work for the glory boys and took possession more than any player on the field. Passed forward on lots of occasions too!

Personally I think Firebug paid Rafa to start Gayle so he could get his bingo win.

    Firebug and Rafa….Out!

Guess I have to reign in the wording of the Gallowgate chants!
One of season’s highlights, when Wor Henri went to take a corner in the Strawberry Corner!
    ‘Henri Lansbury is a w……….!’

Jib, save face from what exactly? I’m fairly certain if it was tactical Rafa would have just said that. Besides, after Gayles first run into the Leazes box you could see he was struggling to turn.

Excellent atmosphere was gradually fading, due to Villa’s tactics, excellent pressing plus some shady niggly fouls!
Wished I could have stayed under the Gallowgate banner first 35 mins!

Very very rare for any manager to make a tactical substitution on 33 minutes, maybe in rugger but not the beautiful game.

Colback very good, nearly great goal!
Paolo Dummett, the new Brazilian wing back – very good!
    Defence solid.
    Shelvey good but bit wayward.
Ritchie Mom except for Wor Henri with own goal of the season!!

Gayle would of been furious if it was tactical, he wasn’t, he was disappointed

Interesting that Rafa would rather play a half fit Gayle than the alternatives though especially against poor opposition

    Much more like it Mitro!
Gayle was holding his hamstring before going off, maybe responding to question from team mates.

Mitro put in a decent shift and even chased back, he looked sharper too maybe he needs a run of games to get going.

The thing that impressed me the most about Mitro was his controlled aggression – tussling with defenders without getting involved in a silly scrap – never looked like getting a yellow card.

I think the game changed in our favour when Mitro came on. His hold up play and bringing others into play was the best I’ve seen from him this season. Keep it up Big lad!

Mitro Looked decent last night, my only real criticism of him would be he was rarely in a shooting position when we were attacking. To be fair to him though, he was doing a lot in the midfield mixing it up.

Was the Gayle substitution not instigated by Gayle himself
indicating he wanted to be subbed?

So – anyone who suggests it was a tactical substitution must
think Gayle is in charge of tactics?

And Rafa is just in charge of the tic tacs.

So did Mitro do enough to start on Saturday?
or will we go with Murphy?
Would love to see Mitro and Murphy up top with Atsu giving Ritchie a break so he doesn’t booking and maybe Yedlin moved forward into Ritchies place and Atsu replacing Gouffran, and hopefully crosses going into the box for big lads,
    Never happen but hey.
