Benitez Bemoans Mistakes – Newcastle At Some Risk Now

If the Newcastle defense keeps making the mistakes we saw against Bristol City yesterday, then there’s a chance we could mess up our promotion drive.

We saw the same mistakes against Norwich City and QPR and it was two high balls into the box that was our undoing yesterday.

The more games that go by where we fail to win the game against much lower placed sides at home – takes us closer to the tragedy of missing out on promotion this season.

That would be devastating for Newcastle United – let’s make no mistake about that – so our players need to waken up and shape up and quickly too.

Rafa Benitez on the touchline yesterday

We cannot keep throwing away points like we did yesterday against a relegation threatened side who hadn’t won in their last seven games and we gifted them two goals in the first 21 minutes.

🙁 🙁 🙁

This is what Rafa Benitez had to say after the game and he mentions the mistakes more than once.

“I have said before though we can’t make the same mistakes.” “We made mistakes against Norwich and after that we had a great reaction.”

“This against Bristol City has been very similar.” “We were very dominant in the second half and created a lot of chances because we were losing.”

“When you have anxiety it’s not clear to take your chances.”

“You could see in the second half when we play with this high tempo and create the chances we did, we will win these games.”

“But we made mistakes and gave them an advantage.” “Normally when you are winning 2-0 it’s easier to work hard in defense and play counter attack.”

“If we play at the same level of the second half I will be happy with that.” “But it’s something that we have done in a lot of games. We can carry on doing the same.”

We are almost certain to see changes to the starting side on Tuesday night at Brighton and it looks like Dwight Gayle is fit again but the lad is having some confidence problems about his hamstring.

It’s Dwight we need in the side because he can score goals out of nothing.

We labored again yesterday and Mitrovic was a big let-down up front for the side.

Mitro needs to do his talking on the pitch as do some of our other players too.

We could even see Rob Elliot back in goal for Karl Darlow at Brighton, as Karl looked indecisive again a few times yesterday.

Bristol are fighting for their lives and used every underhand trick in the book to not lose.

Brighton and Huddesfield will be chomping at the bit to get at us. However, we play better away from home and punish teams that don’t sit back with 10 men behind the ball.

    6 points by Saturday night.

Need to move on from yesterday’s horror result.
The defence and GK need a shake up. Elliot im for Darlow, Henley in for Lascelles, Murphy for Mitro, Diame for Perez.
Not sure what has happened to the Mitro Perez combo but it is not working in a 4 2 3 1 system.

There’s no way we will be getting 6 points from those two teams.

4231 is not working, should try 433 we used it a couple of seasons ago with a good attacking front three.

    Ba Cisse Ben Arfa

    They were awesome.

Gayle Mitrovic Ritchie, that would be awesome with Atsu, shelvey and Yedlin behind them.

Both Brighton & Huddersfield will tear this team a new one. FatAshes unwillingness to spend in January could come back to haunt us – the fact that we had a trading surplus from the summer window shows that cash is king.

Reading will not be easy either as they look to get back in the hunt.

Our home form is a little worrying…..and if we were to lose the away form this season could get messy quick…..the other thing is if promoted…most premier league side build there season around home form we should making this place a fortress now to build up momentum and confidence to get most of our points at home next season…..we will not be anywhere near as affective away from home next season as we are this season…players need to start showing up at home, wake up from the kick off and start punishing sides….home attitude is key…and has to change.

This slow , slow & even slower play build up is killing us. We simply can’t play that way & every time we do so we end up shooting ourselves in the foot. The few times we have played at pace we have destroyed teams , it’s about time Raffa took the shackles and let them play the way they can. At this rate we will end up in the play off’s the way we are going…

how is it not working you melon? top of the league for virtually all season, top scorers, fewest conceded.

How does changing a system legislate for or explain darlow’s mistakes v qpr, norwich and bristol. As numpties go you’re right up there. you should be the poster boy for prats-r-us

I don’t think this team can cope with the weight of expectation at SJP. That’s not criticising the supporters, by the way!

Just saw highlights. The mitrovic header not the sitter I was made to believe, atsu chance was better.

Comeback from two down that’s very positive.

We’ll need to grind out 7 wins. we’re OK, looking at that table.

Hope Brighton game is on TV.

    Each to their own.

Every team has an off day.

But I have every faith that we will be 6 points richer come Saturday night.

Ed seems to think it’s ‘certain’ that Rafa will leave if we don’t go up. Nothing in this crazy game is certain. If we don’t get promoted then it’s highly likely that he’ll leave, but it’s not certain. He surprised us by staying when we went down, he could surprise us again.

Anyone got any stats on how we perform when Hanley plays at the back.
He’s strong physically and a no nonsense defender so could be very useful over the next few games – is he fit ?

I’m trying not to be too critical of the big guy but in my view the Mitro headed chance was the next best thing to a centre forward sitter as you can hope for.
Clear sight, clear run at it, good pace on the ball and no challenge on him, central enough. He only had to direct it down a little and it would have been very difficult to stop.
He showed some green shoots on Monday but not yesterday.
I would start Murphy now if Gayle isn’t available, and probably even if he is.

Not sure who is voting for Mitro – he was terrible yesterday, laboured even in 2nd half and missed a sitter – I’m sorry but he’s had a run of games now and looks no better – strikers job is to score and he barely wins any headers never mind being in the right place

I have more faith in getting something away at Brighton, Huddersfield and Reading – we are terrible against teams we are expected to beat easily , especially at home – players mentality is all wrong for these games as they seem to think they’ll stroll these games despite the fact we barely show up

I’d be surprised if Rafa left in the summer, whether we got promoted or not. Of course, if he felt that Ashley didn’t give him sufficient backing he’d go.

I agree we do exactly that, the perplexing thing is why can’t the group of players learn from this psychological error?? It’s happened several times this season alone. Rafa must be all over them about it!?

I’d say that was more players mentality rather than tactics, too lethargic and expecting to just turn up and win.

Also do we play Atsu v Brighton or be safe with Gouffran??

I’ll have another look. It just seems he’s a target man ( for criticism) when others play just as bad. But didn’t see game.

On Rafa: 30 million?! That’s ridiculous, he’d take it I think. But don’t know the guy.

If we don’t get promoted it won’t be because of rafas tactics?, how can you legislate for darlows howlers, mitrovic missing sitters ,there’s games when are possession and shots on target are that of a top team.
We have a central defender lascelles who opposition teams play on because he’s erratic and how memba can’t get in is behond me.,
I believe we will show what a good side we have this week,we’re not a premier team yet but this was never rafas remit, come on Rafa get us out of the championship then worry about been good enough for the premier league.

We have been lucky with some of the matches we have won, some of the chances the opposition have had against us that they should have put away is ridiculous, only reason why we are up there is because of poor finishing, our style of play is poor, not once have i enjoyed a live match on sky, if you think we are going to do well in the premiership next season with the way we play then you need to book an appointment with spec savers asap.

Toonincheek – Ill be here Tuesday first off – went to the last two Brighton games (FA Cups) and was not impressed – admittedly a few seasons ago but they play attacking football with pace and have plenty of goals in the team. Our fullbacks are in for a torrid time and the CB’s are lacking confidence. Goals are in issue for us and I cant see us holding out for a 0-0.

I wont be there this time but I do fear for the result.

Not sure how RAFA can change the team to get them to play better – start quicker – Most games whatever the line up we play sideways keep possession backward ponderous football.

We don’t seem to get going at the minute unless we fall behind or the second half.

Best I have seen us play is the first half away against Villa Home and away late on against Norwich and
believe it or not the last 30 minutes yesterday but sadly Mitro and Perez didn’t seem to react to ATSU who was my MOM getting down the wing and pulling the ball back across the box.

Natural Goalscorer like Gayle or for that matter Defoe would of read the situation and bust a gut to get in the six yard box not 10 – 20 yards behind.
