Newcastle Need A New Striker This Summer But Who?

At the beginning of the January transfer window Rafa Benitez wanted a winger, central midfielder and a striker brought in and then that was reduced to a winger and a central midfield player.

But Rafa failed to get anybody into the club and his targets of Andros Townsend and James McCarthy may still be transfer targets this summer – if we can get promoted back to the Premier League.

One of the ways we have lost too many points this season is by not being able to score when we have been on so much on top and we have missed far too many of our chances.

So one area that Rafa needs to improve his side is at striker.

Callum Wilson – 25 year-old Bournemouth striker

When we take Dwight Gayle out of the line-up, Newcastle are not as ruthless in front of goal and we must have dropped a lot of points since Dwight injured his hamstring at Brentford on 14th January.

We have been linked for a while now with Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson who turned 25 yesterday and also with 22 year-old French U21 International Sebastien Haller.

We’re not too sure about Callum Wilson, although he looks a decent player and this season he has 6 goals in 20 appearances for Bournemouth, and maybe Rafa sees something in his skill and speed that he could further develop at Newcastle.

He seems expensive at around £20M.

Haller plays for FC Utrecht and he’s played 20 times for the French U21 side and scored 13 goals; he’s played for all the French Youth teams.

This season he’s looked good and scored 10 times in 26 games for his club and there were rumors last summer that Rafa had tried to persuade him to come to Newcastle, but he didn’t want to play in England’s second division.

Haller however is keen to play in the Premier League so he’s a potential target this summer.

One young striker we have recently been linked with is 19 year-old Chelsea England U21 International Dominic Solanke, who seems to want to leave Chelsea this summer, but manager Antonio Conte is keen to keep him at the London club.

Dominic Solanke – 19 year-old Chelsea and England U21 striker

Solanke becomes a free agent at the end of June, but Chelsea will still get some compensation for him because he is under 24 and has come through Chelsea’s famous Youth Academy.

He would be one for the future and not a starter at the club – at least not initially.

It could be Rafa brings somebody in that we haven’t yet been linked with – but striker is one area we must improve for next season – we need more goalscorers in the side up front.

Rafa could also unload a striker or two this summer.

Seen Haller a few times, he’s decent but like Mitro be misses easy chances far too often!

The Hudd game is more important in that with win there and a draw tonight, we should be at worse even to where we are now with two less games to the end. That being said, I do understand some trepidation, but not the outright pessimism about the Brighton game. I am excited. True we need to be top two at the end, but isn’t this the type of important game you want to see. A little heart in stomach excitement is what sports are about, I am confident our team will play hard and I see no reason why we can’t take all three points. We have played great on the road all season and I am jealous of our away fans (who will be there in person and voice. I would love to be there.

IMHO we fail a few times because of our lack of a plan B or even using plan B against so called weaker teams at the bottom of the league.. Raffa simply refuses to play with 2 strikers on the pitch at the same time sticking to his 4-2-3-1 formation. So it really does not matter if he buys another striker , they are simply going to warm the bench.
I always thought he would start the season with 3-2-3-2 as we have the players to use that system and use it well.
But I guess we will never know.
Tonight against Brighton we should use Mitro & Murphy to occupy their center halfs as playing Mitro alone will leave 2 to take care of him freeing their full backs forward as often as possible. With 2 big target men it will help to pin them back as neither of the center halfs are blessed with any pace…
My 2 cents worth for what its worth..
