Chris Hughton will always be remembered for the fantastic job he did to get us promoted in 2010.
And then he was ruthlessly dismissed in that December by then Managing Director Derek LLambias, but the London man is held in high esteem by Newcastle fans.
Chris is down to earth after games too, although he thinks the penalty given against Ciaran Clark after 14 minutes was the right decision by referee Madley.
Rafa Benitez and Chris Hughton before the game
This is some of that Chris Hughton said after the game as reported in the Brighton Argus:
“I’ve seen it once on replay. There’s no doubt he’s got his hands over him. The referee was in a very good position to see it and has given it, so yes I think it was a penalty.”
“From our point of view it’s one of those really unfortunate goals (the Diame goal).”
“I wondered at the time how it had gone in and it gives a very strong Newcastle team momentum and a real lift in that last period.”
“I didn’t think we were at our best, but I felt we would hold on and get a result.
“Newcastle are a very good side, irrespective of some results, with by far the best squad in this division, and they can show it at times.”
“Certainly the winning goal was one of real quality.”
Both teams showed last night why they are the best two sides in the Championship and you would expect both to go up in automatic promotion spots.
But you never know what will happen in football and Huddersfield Town are still a big threat.
We are taking nothing for granted.
