Benitez was asked yesterday about what it was that has enabled him to equal the away win record of Newcastle in the second division, by getting our 13th away win in 18 games on Saturday at 3rd top Huddersfield Town.
He responded that he recruited players who had both effort and attitude, but were also quality players.
Rafa thinks a lot about the game of football (like – all the time) and he has even talked today about what quality is in any footballer.
Rafa Benitez directing things on the training pitch
Rafa was asked by the local media yesterday what type of players he wanted to sign last summer and this is how he responded to that question, as reported in the Chronicle today:
“If you want to improve anything you need to have the right attitude.”
“In modern football we talk too much about quality, but what is quality?
“It’s not just to stop the ball and put it 40 meters or score a brilliant free-kick, that is technical ability.”
“Quality is about doing the right things.” “To win games you need both effort and attitude.”
People in the game talk about players making the right and wrong decisions in a game and of course in order to get to the top level you need that experience so you can learn from your mistakes.
But we have around 10 players in the squad who have obviously improved a lot this season under the guidance and top coaching of Rafa Benitez.
If we are promoted then expect a number of very good players who will want to join the Rafa revolution on Tyneside, so if we can only get promoted this season we are in for some good times ahead at Newcastle United.
First things first though – we have to beat Reading tonight at the Madejski Stadium – that’s all that matters at the moment.
