DeAndre Yedlin was not available for the game last night and it looks like he will be out for a little while with Jesus Gamez getting a rare start last night at the Madejski Stadium in the 0-0 stalemate.
Jesus is an experienced player and played quite well last night, but he tired in the second half probably due to his lack of match practice.
We also have Vurnon Anita coming back from injury, so we should have enough cover for the young American.
DeAndre Yedlin and Rafa Benitez
Didn’t realize he had the injury
The news is that Yedlin has suffered a thigh injury – a thigh tear – and it seems he has had the problem since the Brighton game.
This is what Rafa said last night as reported in the Shields Gazette:
“Yedlin didn’t realise he had the problem against Brighton. We protected him against Huddersfield, but he had to come on.”
“But he was complaining, and you could see that maybe it would be one week or two weeks. He had a knock. Maybe has a small tear.”
One or two weeks is not too bad at all because we have two more games – at home to Fulham on Saturday and the following week away at Birmingham City – before the two week International break.
It would be good if we can get two wins in those games.
Newcastle can play Vurnon Anita at right back and probably give another game to Jesus Gamez, since the Spanish right-back is experienced and has played very little football all season.
