There’s news in the Mirror today that Newcastle will try to sign Nottingham Forest winger Ben Osborn in the summer if we manage to get promotion back to the Premier League.
As we get closer to promotion – wins will do it – Rafa and Lee Charnley will be talking closely about the targets in the coming transfer window and Rafa will want to bring them in ASAP so they get a full pre-season.
Rafa rates the 22 year-old Nottingham Forest winger and apparently tried to sign him in January, but Forest wouldn’t do the deal.
Ben Osborn – Newcastle target this summer
But Benitez will be ready to build up the quality of his squad this summer in order that we can fight in the upper half of the Premier league table next season.
That will be a big change under Mike Ashley since we have only finished twice in the top 10 – 5th in 2012 and 10th in 2014 – and that’s a pathetic record – but we are hoping Mike will support Rafa fully to become the owner of a successful football club.
There’s a thought.
Ben would cost around £5M and he’s another Englishman Rafa is after and Ben was born in Derby.
He has appeared 37 times with three goals for Forest this season and he made his debut in the Championship back in March 2014 against Ipswich Town.
Since that time he has played 125 times for the club with 10 goals and 17 assists.
Ben has been a regular starter for the last three seasons at Forest and he is an experienced Championship player and could be very good value for just £5M.
He could also perform at the Premier League level and take the step up in class.
Ben started his career at his home town club Derby County back in 2002 as a 7 year-old but then joined Nottingham Forest the following year and has come through the Youth Academy at Forest.
Osborn was given an extension on his deal this season and he is now contracted to the club until 2020.
He would be a great acquisition if we can get him for just £5M.
Newcastle could also go after Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace £13M), James McCarthy (Everton – up to £20M) and Harry Maguire (Hull – £12M) in early summer too.
What do you think?
