Reading Manager Praises The Quality Of Newcastle

Newcastle’s lead at the top of the Championship was cut by 2 points to only 3 points last night as Brighton won 2-0 at Rotherham (Huddersfield won 1-0 at home to Aston Villa) and we could only draw 0-0 at 5th placed Reading.

It was a decent game and Newcastle could and probably should have won this game based on the chances we had, but on the other hand we nearly lost it at the death as Reading hit the cross-bar with only seconds to go in stoppage time.

Rafa Benitez and Jaap Stam last night

This is what Reading manager Jaap Stam said after the game and for a change he didn’t seem to be criticizing Newcastle because we are a big club with money and all that stuff:

“In think Newcastle will get away – they are a quality side,” “They are not giving many chances away.”

“They can always break and create a chance to score a goal.” “They have a lot of quality to do well against every team.”

“They are lots of points ahead. They will get away.”

“We played very well against a good side like Newcastle. I am very happy with the performance.”

“I think we were stronger than Newcastle. We know what we can do and we are confident.”

“This was against a side like this, who have a lot of quality with a good manager.”

“We could have done a little better by scoring one goal. We need to keep on going.”

It would be good if we can win our next two games before the two week International break.

We have Fulham at home on Saturday and then Birmingham City away the following Saturday.

Could only listen but it sounds like Reading sat back and did very little apart from the odd flash. I’d say they thought taking a point from us when those above took none in previous week’s was a decent haul. We just need to keep doing what we have been doing all season. Go boys and go Rafa

If someone had offered me thoselast 3 results before the games I’d have taken their hands off.

Didn’t watch game. Note that he felt they were better than us, which may or may not be true.

Surely, 4 wins and a couple draws will see us through. Not even nufc can’t blow it now, surely.

Only one team with 90 points has blown it ever- Sunderland.

I don’t agree with him that they were better than us, yes they had more possession, but we created more chances, and made better use of the ball when we did have it, they did pretty much nothing except pass it amongst themselves.

I’m delighted with the last three results & if we had to drop any points it was exactly as I had hoped – we won the two biggest games & 7 points from 9 against the 2nd, 3rd & 5th placed teams away from home is 1st class in my eyes! Well done Newcastle United!
