If Newcastle can get promoted back to the Premier League this season then it promises to be an exciting summer of recruitment for the club, but there’s still an if with that promotion.
Expect Newcastle to be linked with a number of players this summer (as usual) and most of the reports will not be accurate, but what’s changed?
In Belgium, we are being linked today with 55 times capped Belgian International winger Dries Marten who currently plays for Napoli in Italy.
Dries Martens – 29 year-old Napoli forward
The report is in Het Nieuwsblad and it would be an odd signing for Newcastle for a player who turns 30 in May and his best years may well be behind him.
The link to Newcastle is presumably because Rafa Benitez signed Martens in the summer of 2013 when he had just taken over as the Napoli manager.
And Martens contract at Napoli runs out next year.
It will depend on which other players Newcastle have as targets in the summer, but Martens is a very decent player so it would depend a lot on what Napoli wanted for a player who has one year left on his contract.
Since moving to Napoli almost four years ago from PSV, Martens has played 172 times for the Italian club with 58 goals.
It would be a big surprise if Newcastle are really interested in this player.
But what do you think?
