One Newcastle Star To Stay – One To Leave This Summer

There was an interesting report in the Chronicle that Rafa Benitez will definitely not be selling Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer.

Given that Mitro has been upbeat of late when the news in the press has been his Newcastle career may be over, that may not come as too much of a shock to Newcastle fans.

It could be that Rafa Benitez sees the promise in the still young 22 year-old – and wants more time to bring out the best in the Serbian International striker.

Aleksandar Mitrovic against Preston North End

Certainly Mitro loves playing for Newcastle United and it would be a personal blow if he was sold this summer.

However, we do need more scoring power up front and have dropped too many points this season by missing the chances we have created in a lot of our games.

So Rafa wants to bring in a top striker this summer to add competition to the strikers already at the club.

Daryl Murphy may get the nod to start at Birmingham on Saturday and he still has one year left on his contract and we’ll see if Dwoght Gayle can repeat his heroics of this season in the Premier League next season.

Always assuming we are promoted.

Mitro says he is happy at Newcastle and doesn’t want to move, after his family is now said to be very settled on Tyneside.

But it’s been noticeable that both signings from Anderlecht two years ago – Aleksandar and Chancel Mbemba – have struggled for playing time at Newcastle under Rafa Benitez.

And Chancel, who is another popular player on Tyneside, is likely to be sold this summer after playing only 8 times for Newcastle this season.

That was after appearing 35 times for the side last season and playing really well.

What do you think?

How Will Newcastle Fare at Birmingham?

I wouldn’t trust the likes of our so-called best players (Shelvey? Gayle? Etc) to turn it on week in week out. We need heavyweights. Three minimum, 50-60 million.

    Rafa knows that. I hope.

If Rafa had a veiled message for Ashley, it was well veiled mate.

On transfers, yes big money signings don’t guarantee success, as many heavily investing teams, subsequently relegated or failing, will attest.

But, odds are on your side if you buy expensive experienced players. Having watched our team, if we don’t invest, if we are promoted, we’ll come straight down again. It’s not like we’ve blown teams away. We’ve ground results, in a lower division.

Having said that, it’s a better level than outsiders think.

Mitro probably will stay as there was talk of signing a player (International ? ) from Europe who would his buddy.
Chancel is maybe sidelined not so much for football reasons but maybe he’s yet to settle in ? He deserves to be part of the future so maybe we should recruit some buddies for him as well.

Yedlin out for 5 weeks is not great news as he’s an offensive player and that keeps midfield and defensive opposition occupied.

Anyone think Diames international retirement will have a huge positive impact on his club performances? No? Me neither.

I wonder if Mbemba would still leave if big bids were made for either or both Lascelles / Clarke?

Rafa wants top rated players …not a Everton player who is on the bench …if newcastle want to compete in top level they need to bring players who are at least worth 20 mill or more ..I would rather as us spend 60 mill on three players than 10 crappy players who r not good enough

@7, that’s an interesting point, in 2 out of the last 3 seasons Sunderland have been amongst the biggest spenders buying lots of 3 or 4 million pound players, and look at their team. Frankly a shambles. Reckon you are bang on about buying a few 20M + players rather than lots of crap. I’m all for value for money, but in order to consolidate in the Prem you need some class and consistency.

I am not sure Sunderland’s problem has been how much/little they have spent on individual players – it’s more their poor levels of scouting.

If we had the same levels of net-spend as Sunderland last time around in the Premier League, no doubt it would have been spent on cheaper players, but we surely would have made a better fist of it.

Not having a net-spend for 6 years in the Premier League is frankly ridiculous. All of that scrimping and saving did produce profits, which were then splurged to save the club from relegation after years of neglect… too little too late. The profits are gone, the club is relegated, and Ashley has to put another £30 million on the club debt to cover costs.

Aside from money raised from the sale of players, I would love to know where the rest is going to come from for summer recruitment. It does not matter if the club is in the PL or not next year, the club will need to recruit either way if it is to move forward.

The thing I found strange about the Yedlin story is why is he with the USA team before the international break – why would we not send him to see a specialist in this country?
On Mbemba – Rafa obviously doesn’t rate him but I’m not sure why not – he seemed to have potential, yes he made mistakes but he is still quite young.

@11, I rate Mbemba, but I suspect he doesn’t, or can’t play the Rafa way, which is why I suspect he isn’t getting a game.

From listening to Total sport and mackems, the problem seems to come from so many different managers buying players and Ellis Short scrimping on under qualified DoF’s.

Funny one with Mitro, scored ten or eleven PL goals in a shite demoralised team in his first season then has been pretty ineffective in a better team, a weaker league more suited to his physicality, not playing to his strengths, he’s missed a lot of chances.

Illuminating article but I wonder why there has not been enough done in training to change the application of Mbemba. Alternatively, a change in position because he certainly has skills that make him a good footballer, despite not being able to pick a forward pass.

A rhetorical question made from a position of care. Has something changed in your personal life in the last year? I remember you being light hearted, humorous and although a little too much, a good natured poster. I know you can not do much about people picking on your nationality, but you seem to have become single minded about Rafa and unable to not respond to provocation. As I say, I am just concerned and hope you are well.

He maintained all along he didn’t want to sell sissoko while hoping the bidding war would start ,and to his credit it did with an amazing result other than those poor soles in north London .
Guess he could be playing same game with the mitro situation .

And as for Chelsea he was only ever brought in as an interim manager ( this after pep guadiola had apparently been offered the job but bottled it when he saw what he could be walking into)until the end of the season .
At Chelsea he turned the season around with some very shrewd moves ,moving David Luis from centre back into midfield to let him spray passes all over the park .branislav ivanovich looked lost for any consistency until he moved him into Luis ‘s old position to provide the steel in the middle they were lacking .Heleft them in 3 red place in the prem at the end of the season .
Before he left he won the Europa cup beating Benfica who had knocked us out .
Even when he left Real they were in pretty decent shape and we’ll set up to go one and win the champions league welsh .
So not sure of your point .
