Predicted Starting Eleven For Birmingham – Four Changes

Rafa Benitez is likely to make a few changes from the side that played so poorly last Saturday against Fulham to lose our 5th game at home this season – this time by a score of 3-1.

The defense needs to play a lot better and we will assume that Ciaran Clark is not available for the game because of injury, so Grant Hanley will get his chance tomorrow.

Paul Dummett has been playing with pain in his heel and needs an injection before each game, but we still expect him to be in the side tomorrow, otherwise Jesus Gamez could start at left back.

Ayoze Perez – could start tomorrow

Paul can then have a two week rest during the International break since he has not been called up by Wales boss Chris Coleman because of the heel problem.

So here’s the team Rafa could start at St. Andrew’s tomorrow afternoon and it shows four changes from the side that started against Fulham in the last game.

Darlow
Anita Lascelles Hanley Dummett (Gamez)
Shelvey Colback
Ritchie Perez Gouffran
Murphy

Daryl Murphy played well and scored an excellent goal against Fulham and was our Man of the Match and we expect him to start tomorrow and his vast experience in the Championship will help the side.

We have Perez getting a chance in the number 10 position coming in for Mo Diame and Yoan Gouffran back on the left wing in place of Christian Atsu.

You can’t really argue with that team.
It will be there or thereabouts.
Diame deserves to be dropped on the basis of last week.
    He was a man off.
Strange as he keeps producing the goods from time to time.
But, you never know which Diame will turn up.

Everyone of our promotion rivals brought in a couple of new faces even if they were just on loan. Maybe Rafa didn’t want loans and Churners spent his time trying to get Rafas targets via loan deals.

If Dummet is going to play lije that again due to injury he’s better off dropped, Anita was hopeless as well, he didn’t do much wrong to be fair he just didn’t do anything.

Not sure what happened in the window.
Sometimes I feel we feel obliged to spend 15 million because we are Newcastle.
Could we not have brought in 2 or 3 handy players on loan.
    Others certainly have.
Thing is right now we have one midfield pairing.
    Colback and Shelvey.

Shelvey Diame, Shelvey Colback, Diame Colback, also variations including Anita and Mbemba, both internationals and comfortable in midfield.

Actually Clark can also hold, as can Gamez.

Diame – Not a central midfielder for me. Range of passing not there. Would he be able, willing to get through the work needed to support Shelvey. Not sure about that.
Anita – Not 100% at the moment. I think he would be ok at best.
Mbemba – Rafa would never play him there if he plays him at all.
Interesting piece in the Chron. Few days back. Rafa picks players he can trust to carry out his instructions to the letter. I think it’s clear from his favoured team who he trusts and those he does not.

I think we have pretty remarkable depth and quality for the Championship. We may lack a little quality, to make up for a lack of experience in the division. One extra epl quality player in January to give us a bit more for the run in.

    Posada.

That was an interesting piece about Mbemba.
It seemed to suggest that Mbemba’s lack of English, in not understanding Rafa’s instructions well enough, is the reason he has largely been left out in the cold by the manager.
The vocabulary a footballer needs is not that extensive, and he’s been here for quite some time now, I’m thinking that there’s probably more to it than a language problem.

I think there has to be. The article also said Rafa asked him to play diagonal balls out from the back.
It didn’t happen. In fact he did the opposite.
Thing is if it was language you could have a conversation with him at length with a really good interpreter. It’s not a conversation you would have to have every week.

    Tony Green.
Great player. Fondly remembered by many.
Remarkable as he only played 30 odd games for the club.
Shame really. His injury is probably something they could fix these days.

My own awareness of Newcastle started with the 74 Cup final, before that the stories came from the old man and was all pre 1970 stuff, when we immigrated to Australia. So the Tony Green era largely passed us both by. But I had a coach who played for the Boro first team at that time, and he said that Green was the best player he ever played against.

Have seen some highlights of a game he played in against Man U, including Best, Law and Charlton, and he was the best player on the pitch. Definitely had bags of skill and energy. Best footballer though, that’s a bit contentious. We’ve had some splendid talent, that played far more games at the highest level, but for sure he must have been special.

Whatever the problem, Mbemba does have a great opportunity with the injuries we have, provided he is selected, to impress Rafa and stake his claim to be here next season.

I hope he does mate. He’s quick and not many if anyone will run past him.
When he signed the craik was he could play anywhere across the back line.
He may be needed at RB.

It could be as simple as they had a huge fall out over the Wolves game and Mbemba gave him too much lip back?

    Mag52,
Next season we need an experienced.commanding CB and I think Mbemba will be the one to make way with Lascelles and Clarke fighting to partner him, Hanley will be here for awhile doing what he’s so far done best, sitting on the bench uncomplaing and doing a steady job when asked to.

If Clark is out Mbemba is the natural replacement in style. Hanley is in the Williamson ilk downgraded Lascelles so the two of them together doesn’t sound much like a Rafa defence

13 mill? I don’t know what’s going on with Mbemba have heard a few rumours about him not settling up here and the language issues, still think he’s better suited to better football. Interesting that imdepsite everyone saying he’s getting sold I’ve not seen one planted link to anyone

Has Prutton actually admitted that? Haha what a helmet but fair play if he’s admitted it, bit like Roy Keane desperately trying to remain relevant. They should really just try being good pundits rather than just spouting it wpuld do them better

If we are better off playing away every 3-4 days, with no time to train, it does not say much for the Coaching when we are at home with a week of potential training!!!

The black and white faithful will just have to get used to Rafa’s style – he does fall out with players .

Jamie Carragher wrote in an article last week that while at Lpool Rafa decided he wanted to replace Xabi Alonso with Gareth Barry (then at Villa and flavour of the month) and relations between Benitez and the Basque were never the same after.

Unlike many fans who have favourites , for Rafa it’s the team – first , last , and always.
