Newcastle Reported After 28 Year-Old Left Sided Midfielder

The Sun is reporting that Newcastle United are keen on 28 year-old Burnley left-sided midfielder Scott Arfield, which comes as a bit of a surprise and we wonder if he’s good enough.

Arfield hasn’t always been a starter for Burnley, but he is versatile which the Sun says is his main attraction that Newcastle are interested in him.

The player was born in Dechmont in Scotland and brought up north of the border but plays for the Canadian National side – but he only has 6 caps for them.

Scott Arfield – 28 year-old Burnley midfielder

He qualifies to play for Canada because his father was born in Toronto.

Scott has played 30 times in all competitions for Burnley this season with one goal and when we have seen him play he’s looked fairly ordinary and is usually a second half substitute

We would be very surprised if there is any truth in the Sun report and surely Rafa will be wanting better players than Arfield in the squad to challenge for an upper half finish in the Premier League next season?

That’s always assuming we are promoted in May.

Arfield moved from Huddersfield Town four years ago after he was released by the Terriers and became a free agent since then he has made 168 appearances for Burnley with 20 goals and 11 assists.

His Burnley contract runs out in June of next year, but we cannot believe Rafa Benitez would be interested in this journeyman player – but we’ve been wrong before.

🙂

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Personal note – I am off to the hospital today for some tests and could be out for the rest of the day.

These types of players won’t keep us up in Prem League. We need real quality 5-6 players at least.

Really glad that football organisations are starting to knuckle down on all the homophobic, biphobic and transphobic chants and fans at games. It’s about time, I love this sport but sometimes the fans can ruin it with there stupidity.

I don’t know if he’s kept himself in shape, but I’d bet that Sir Les could still score goals for us even at fifty.

Oh and I’m not at all surprised at Darlows (Mainly) good form for us, he was performing well enough towards the end of last season.

Ed, hope your tests go well. Canada play Scotland in a friendly tonight – it will be interesting to see if Arfield plays so we can check him out because I can’t remember him playing for Burnley.

Also I agree with Mag52 & Ron Knee that Mitro and Diame have been the 2 most disappointing players this season. I thought the Championship would be well suited to Mitro’s game and we had a better version of Sissoko in Diame – sadly I was wrong on both counts 🙁

EGB @ 3. Lez has knee issues and struggles for 10 mins of charity games sadly. I felt sorry for him giving Al the number 9shirt. I remember he asked FA for number 99 but was refused for what ever

Seems unlikely signing unless he’s free… Solid player for a squad..
Said before, I’ve worked with a model that used to date Andre Grey, still friends with him etc, she said he’s boasted a couple of times Newcastle are watching him and he fancies the move. Whether they’ll agree a price is another matter, apparently he agreed a move to Leicester last summer to replace Vardy and Burnley messed Leicester around over stupid money valuations and in the end Leicester signed Ahmed Musa, and Vardy stayed.

Scott Arfield? Must be a quiet day in the Sun office. Rafa has probably never even heard of him, as frankly, I keep forgetting the kid exists until Burnley bring him on from the subs bench in the last 5 minutes of every game to help wind the clock down. The only reason we would ever be interested in a player like this, is if we are planning on another season in the Champo.

My guess in the summer, we’ll see Rafa build an British spine, Can see us having a least one British CB, CM and striker, Rafa loves building around a home grown central core. Could perhaps see a foreign winger or fullback coming in as for non English league experienced players, it can be easier to adapt in wide positions as any adapting or mistakes aren’t as punishable.
Reckon McCarthy and Townsend will probably be nailed on if we get promoted, both are the kind of solid players we’ll need to hit the ground running.
Apparantly they watched callum Wilson a lot…a striker in that mould wouldn’t surprise me either. Similar, wouldn’t shock me if we took 1 or 2 from championship teams that failed to get up…
a summer of Townesend, McCarthy, Cairney, Andre Grey and perhaps Luke Shaw on loan (been rumoured) aswell as anita and gouffran staying and Krul and De Jong coming back in would give us a seriously strong squad (could see Mbemba, Mitro, Haidara and possibly 1 GK going)

Can’t see that there,s a big difference between Wilson and our own Adam Armstrong, why buy the type of player we already have.

Someone mentioned Mbabu the other day, I’d like to see him get a second chance.

If some of the development lads are given the chance to step up then there may not need to be a wholesale influx of new players.

Having said that Grey wouldn’t be a bad buy.

Like you I thought HT was looking at one stage a better version of Sissoko, I even said once that he’s the player Sissoko thought he was, sadly I think I was was wrong.

Love to see him prove me wrong but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Really liked Mbabu when I’ve seen him tbh! Still young and has time, apparently done well on loan!
Not sure what they’ll do with Saivet but he has 4 years on his contract and no club is gonna take him that could afford him. Personally thought he could do a job as he is so versatile, when he was younger he was a running hard working striker, then moved to left wing, then moved to defensive centre mid, now St Ettiene play him as #10. Surprised to hear he wasn’t great attitude in training because he was captain at Bordeaux and runs through walls on the pitch

Andre Gray , Cairney, Townsend , Mccarthy and Maguire would give us a good British and Irish base for Rafa to then sign foreign players from other leagues.

One of the problems I feel that we had before was we would sign foreign players with no support structure from players around them who knew the league so signing a few of the above would give us more quality than we have with experience of the league!

Its going to be very difficult to compete with the top 8 next season

    lordy_geordie,
Thanks for the reply re: why a Sigurdsson buy, would be a risk. I think all costly transfers carry a risk to some degree: that player who does fantastic at one club may disappoint or even flop at another. At least he is thoroughly proven in the EPL, where he leads the league in assists with 11 and 8 goals.
However if by some miracle Ashley would ever sign off on a move for him, I think he would be the perfect fix for one of our biggest needs: a creative and top notch #10 in Rafa’s preferred 4-2-3-1.

He will be back with us next season as he still has a couple of years on his contract I think keeping him for squad depth but if we could get someone like Sigurdsson as well that would be good!!

Rafa likes to rotate so De Jong will play a part IF he is fit….

De Jong looked like hes worth goals, even when he played for us. Got into a lot of good positions, really intelligent late runner into the box. Think he would have been worth some points this year for us. We’ve struggled to find a player in that #10 position, its not pace dependant either, think he’s the most effective player we have at linking midfield to attack. Shame about his bad luck injury wise.
Heartening to hear that he wanted to stay and play this year for us, and it was Rafa that told him to go on loan and get minutes and fitness. Showed he didn’t jump ship! Him and Krul both done interviews In Holland where they don’t seem to have an question that they will be playing for Newcastle next season and both seem to converse with Rafa after every game they play.

If the 2 of them come back fully fit and in good form that would be excellent would save us a bit of cash to spend on other players !

De Jong would have been great in some of the games where the defences have been packed at home as he is someone who would have a shot outside the box or make a late run into the box can also play with his back to goal which Diame and Perez can’t do so lose possession a lot !

I was all for SDJ last season and I know he has had terrible injuries but ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’

I hope he is given a chance if we go up because when playing well he is a great player.
