The Sun is reporting that Newcastle United are keen on 28 year-old Burnley left-sided midfielder Scott Arfield, which comes as a bit of a surprise and we wonder if he’s good enough.
Arfield hasn’t always been a starter for Burnley, but he is versatile which the Sun says is his main attraction that Newcastle are interested in him.
The player was born in Dechmont in Scotland and brought up north of the border but plays for the Canadian National side – but he only has 6 caps for them.
Scott Arfield – 28 year-old Burnley midfielder
He qualifies to play for Canada because his father was born in Toronto.
Scott has played 30 times in all competitions for Burnley this season with one goal and when we have seen him play he’s looked fairly ordinary and is usually a second half substitute
We would be very surprised if there is any truth in the Sun report and surely Rafa will be wanting better players than Arfield in the squad to challenge for an upper half finish in the Premier League next season?
That’s always assuming we are promoted in May.
Arfield moved from Huddersfield Town four years ago after he was released by the Terriers and became a free agent since then he has made 168 appearances for Burnley with 20 goals and 11 assists.
His Burnley contract runs out in June of next year, but we cannot believe Rafa Benitez would be interested in this journeyman player – but we’ve been wrong before.
What do you think?
Personal note – I am off to the hospital today for some tests and could be out for the rest of the day.
