Newcastle are interested in Justin Kluivert, the 17 year-old son of our former striker Patrick Kluivert who played for Newcastle just one season in 2004-2005 and in 37 games he scored 13 goals.
But when Patrick joined us on a free transfer, after spending six seasons at Barcelona, he was well past his best and it was a trophy signing by then Chairman Freddy Shepherd.
Justin is at Ajax where his father started his career and the teenager has already played for the Netherlands U15, U16, U17 and U18 teams and seems like a top teenager who has already played 11 times with one goal for the Ajax first team.
Justin Kluivert – Ajax 17 year-old right winger
The news of Newcastle’s interest was reported in the Chronicle and Justin plays on the right wing, whereas his father was a striker.
Justin has been showing some top form and it seems Newcastle have been scouting him all season and could make a move for him this summer.
Signing promising top young players like Justin is a thing Rafa Benitez wants to do at Newcastle and while the policy is not new – we haven’t had a lot of success in signing top youngsters over the last ten years.
Justin has already said he wants to play in England, so it seems he would be an excellent signing for us this summer and would show that Newcastle are indeed keen on singing top young players in Europe.
Certainly if he turns out anything like his father Patrick he will be a tremendous signing for us.
Patrick was a world-class striker who played for Ajax, Milan and Barcelona before joining us and he played 70 times for the Netherlands with 40 goals.
In his club career he played 468 games for seven different clubs and scored 200 goals.
