Diame, Gayle And Colback Start Against Wigan

Rafa Benitez has just named his starting eleven for the game at St. James’ Park this afternoon against Wigan Athletic – a game we will be expected to win.

The two surprises to us are Mo Diame in the number 10 spot and Jack Colback keeps his place with Isaac Hayden on the bench and Isaac might get some playing time in the second half today.

As expected Dwight Gayle starts up front with Mitro on the bench.

This is what Rafa said about the game at his press conference yesterday:

“We have eight games so now it is a mini league. We must approach one game at a time.”

“We have some players who were injured, and it’s been a good time for them to recover. Some still have problems.”

“We know Wigan are trying to avoid relegation so, as always, it will be a tough game, a difficult one.”

“We have to concentrate on ourselves – if we think too much about Wigan, we will lose our focus.”

“I’ve been really pleased with the atmosphere in the whole city.”

“I have not focused on transfers or next season. The scout department is working on that.”

“But we are focusing on Wigan and that is all.”

More than four in five fans think we will win this game – let’s hope they are right.

We need 3 points from this game today.

First reaction – too defensive. Surprise surprise.

Can understand Hayden not starting but cannot understand Diame as a starter.
When he (occasionally) performs, it’s as a midfielder, coming from deep on those runs.
I don’t see much opportunity for that against a team likely to sit deep.

Trickery of Perez would be a better option.

Oh Jesus, if Obertan comes on and scores a late equaliser/winner on the break.

The abuse would be monumental he probably wouldn’t dare.

Well the one who cannot be critised has done it again….Anita and Dummett. Well the headlines will be Dummett howler and Anita destroyed for lack of pace…..Newcastle lose 2 -0.

WOW! gotta love the optimism on here. I would hope we will be controlling this game and have gone for a 2-0 win. If things need to change we have plenty on the bench who can do that.

I am relieved Obertan isn’t playing. His end-product may be lacking, but he is still a very dangerous player on the break. Not a player you want playing for you, or against you, ironically enough.

Where the hell is Shelvey and Hayden! Come on Rafa sort it out. We really need Shelvey in the centre of midfield bossing the play. Colback only plays it sideways and backwards and Diame in the number 10 role does NOT work!

We really need a win or else the pressure is on. We really needed to start with the right team to make it easier to achieve that. For the sake of our automatic promotion bid and our sanity I really hope Rafa has got it right.

Darlow, Anita, Lascelles, Hanley, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Colback, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle

Shelvey plays, although I cannot see the Twitter team sheet linked above for some reason.
