It wasn’t necessarily a pretty sight this afternoon and Newcastle didn’t play anywhere near their best form but it was a golden 3 points for Newcastle against second bottom Wigan, as Brighton beat Blackburn 1-0, but Huddersfield were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by Burton.
It’s interesting we play Burton Albion at home on Wednesday night – we have been warned.
Newcastle started the game steadily although the magpies found any clear-cut chances hard to come by in the early gong.
Matt Ritchie scores winning goal on 57 minutes
Dwight Gayle started this game and Dwight scored again – his 22nd Championship goal of the season as he put Newcastle ahead in the 36th minute.
Dwight had been well set up by Mo Diame, who was playing against his former club.
It was 1-0 at the break.
But then Newcastle went to sleep just after the break and the Latics equalized after 50 minutes through Michael Jacobs and Rafa will not be happy at the goal conceded.
Michael Jacobs beat Jamaal Lascelles and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Karl Darlow and it was all square at 1-1.
But seven minutes on 57 minutes later it was yet another valuable goal from the very impressive Matt Ritchie that put Newcastle back into the lead and the lads held on and got a great 3 points.
Ritchie first shot hit the post but he then headed the ball past Gilks in the Wigan goal and went crazy.
This is what we wanted – to win and also gain points on the 3rd placed side Huddersfield and we did – a good 3 points.
