Rafa Benitez – It Was A Win – But We Will Improve

It was not a classic game at St. James’ Park this afternoon but our lads ground out their 25th win of the season by a score of 2-1 against Wigan Athletic.

Wigan seem much improved from earlier in the season and they still have a fighting chance to survive in the Championship with seven games to play.

It was not easy today, but it was another 3 points in the bag and that takes us up to 81 points from 39 games and if we keep that pace up we’ll finish with 96 points and be promoted.

Rafa Benitez – happy with win

This is what Benitez said after the game:

“The main thing was to get three points. We knew it was difficult, watching Wigan against Aston Villa we knew they do well.”

“This mini league we have of eight games is now seven and we have won the first, the other teams have made mistakes so we have to concentrate on ourselves.”

“The league table for us is that this is three points for us in the league. It was a win, I have to be happy.”

“I would like to score five goals and be amazing, but at the moment we showed character, good reaction and personality to manage the situation.”

“We can improve on a lot of things, but we do a lot of things well. But when you see Huddersfield losing or Brighton winning 1-0 it shows it is not easy.”

“We need a little more composure on the ball in the final third and then we will score more than we need.”

“We are so close so we have to do well and not suffer. We have to make sure we recover quickly and hopefully do better against Burton.”

The first game of the 8 game mini-season and it was a success.

Now we need to keep it up.

We should be ok now. I think four more wins will leave the 3rd place team needing to win ALL their remaining games to catch us.

At the time of ‘blogging’ Leeds are losing.

Mackems also lost so not a bad day for us !
