Interesting Comments From Rafa’s Press Conference

Rafa Benitez has just given his press conference for the tough and vital game against Burton Albion tomorrow night at St. James’ Park.

He talks about not thinking about a 10 points gap because the Terriers have a game in hand and he says the injury situation is unchanged although DeAndre Yedlin is getting better.

Rafa Benitez – just completed his press conference

Here are some of the initial comments Rafa made about the game tomorrow night where a win would take us 3 points closer to that automatic promotion:

“We have a mini-league. We have seven games now, and we have to try and win this mini-league.”

“You can do the maths or the numbers but you still have to win the games.”

“We don’t see it as a 10-point gap yet because Huddersfield still have a game in hand.”

“Some teams approach the games more defensively.” “When you are in a top side and you attack you can get exposed.”

“We have to do our job, that’s it.”  “We don’t think about a ten point gap.” “It’s a long, long race still to go.”

“If you play well you have more chances, but you can’t always play the way you want, because the other teams are competitive.”

“For us, it’s been the same situation – teams coming to St James’ Park is their game of the season.”  “We’re used to it.”

“It’s not easy at this stage of the season – everybody is playing for something.” “We have to be sure that we are so focused and we don’t have any distractions.”

“Physically, Burton are strong. They have a very clear game-plan.”

“I like my job!” “The division has been a challenge – all teams play differently.”

“Yedlin is getting closer, but it’s more or less the same injury situation.”

A massive majority of Newcastle fans think we win this game tomorrow night.

Not often I expect and predict a walloping, but we really should be walloping Burton.

    Much bigger squad.

Pitch size they’re not accustomed to.

2nd away day in a row for them.

Gayle back on the scoresheet last time out.

Huddersfield slipping up gives the lads a bit more breathing space to perform to their best.

Law of averages says we have to play good football sooner rather than later.

Just need Shelvey to get back on it, if he ticks then we’re a much better team.

Hail – Not so sure about a walloping but hopefully a comfortable win. Not sure my heart can stand another tense game so soon after Saturday 🙂
AncientC – from previous, Jack Wiltshire is one of those players that I just don’t see it and now after all his injuries definitely NOT.

Agreed on Wilshire, i’d take him on a free but silly money being touted for such an injury prone player.

Would love to see a walloping but considering it’s been so long since we won back to back home games any win would do it for me

Its a shame Rafa dont trust the defence enough to play 4-14-1
One sweeper/ holding midfielder and a front 3 with wingers who cover the flanks.
The only player i think who is capable of the sweeper role is probably Mbemba and rafa has lost faith in him as Cb, playing him slightly ahead of the 2 cb offers another 2 layers of defence so if he fails to. Break the oppositions attack, the cb or keeper can do it.
Freeing up Shelvey ,Diame, atsu and Ritchie to either make throughballs, bring the ball forward or cross it into dangerous areas.
Even better ,play Ritchie, Atsu and Gayleas the front three, especially against ” weaker teams used to smaller pitches and on the bones of their arse energywise.
Im going tomorrow night and want to see us win By any score, i just think Rafa can tell the players to go and express themselves from the off, rather than at half time, we have a better everything than them on paper, but unfortunately football is not played on paper….controlled attacks, high pressing to win the ball back in good areas ,solid defence migrating to quick incisive counterattacks, throughballs not hoofballs and ultimately a couple of goals for Dwight so he wins the most goals in this league …..that would be a carlsberg game ……bring on the Albion…HWTL, HWTF

Burton’s players’ll be feeling the effects of playing so many games with a small squad and that’ll give us the advantage of playing our larger pitch to our advantage.

Spread the ball about, use the space to exploit the Burton lads’ tiredness and we should be able to walk the goals in…. well, maybe not walk ’em in but give their keeper a testing time.

I know it is unrealistic, but if we could get in Shaw, Wilshere and Townsend… the side would starting looking very impressive, and with a core of British/Irish players.
    —————–(?)—————–
    Yedlin—-Lascelles—Clark—Shaw
    ———-Wilshere—Shelvey—-
    Townsend——(?)———Ritchie
    —————-Gayle————

That side would be a GK and a number 10 away from the top half side. If only Ashley was ambitious enough to make it happen.

giimps @4 – I think we changed to a similar formation on Saturday after Hayden came on for Diame and he sat just in front of the back 4.

Well i mean in my fantasy world, i’d have it like this

    Darlow
    Yedlin Lascelles Clark Shaw
    Camacho Shelvey
    Ritchie Cairney Jesé
    Gayle/Gray

Camacho from malaga or Dendoncker from anderlecht, players who are ball winning midfielders but also ball players as well.

How much do you think we are in need of a CB if we go up? i’d say we already have 4 solid ones, with 2 in lascelles and mbemba who will only improve, would it really be worth replacing one of them with someone like maguire/gibson or keane (which is slightly unrealistic)?

JamesToon, Cairney would be a good upgrade for number 10. Apparently Marseille are looking at Perez, so a Perez sale should help part-finance a deal.

If Mbemba is worth around £10 million, and he remains 4 choice, it would make sense to sell & replace him. Who with, I have no idea.

I’d like to keep perez, and i think rafa likes him, i think diame will be pushed back into a centre midfield role, and SDJ should be sold.

I do like mbemba and think he has lots of potential, but i dont think rafa likes him, i heard someone saying that he doesn’t like him due to his inability to stay disciplined and follow instructions.

Jese rodriguez would be unrealistic but i think rafa will want someone like him, but who will work hard and track back as well, so basically an upgraded gouffran, or a right footed ritchie. He’ll defo want another mobile striker who’s a proven goalscorer, and thats why i think we’ll see the back of mitro and murphy in the summer unfortunately

The rest of this comment is assuming we get promoted…

There needs to be a massive overhaul of the squad once again in order to improve the general quality. There are players who have given their all this year, but unfortunately, for me, do not cut it in the league above. This is how I believe we should proceed with the squad in terms of who stays.

    Darlow – keep
    Sels – loan
    Elliot – keep
    Krul – sell

    Yedlin – keep
    Anita – keep
    Sterry – loan

    Lascelles – keep
    Clark – keep
    Hanley – keep
    Mbemba – sell
    Good – sell

    Dummet – keep
    Lazaar – keep
    Haidara – sell
    Gamez – sell

    Shelvey – keep
    Colback – sell
    Hayden – keep

    Diame – keep
    Perez – sell
    De Jong – sell

    Atsu – buy
    Ritchie – keep
    Gouffran – sell
    Aarons – keep
    Ameobi – sell

    Gayle – keep
    Mitrovic – sell
    Murphy – keep
    Armstrong – loan (again)

This leaves a core of 16 players, leaving 9 spaces to fill with quality.

    My top targets would be

    Townsend
    Defoe
    Sigurdsson
    Robertson
    An experienced CB leader.

I’m sure there’ll be 1 or 2 surprises in the summer, players not on anybody’s radar. Particularly with Rafa’s thoroughness, knowledge of the European markets and all the contacts he has built up over his career.

Much rather keep Perez than Diame. Perez contributes more and even though his end product is still infuriatingly inconsistent, his assist and goals return is much better than Diame’s, which says a lot about Diame’s end product.

Been a big disappointment for me.

Perez can still improve and is still a work in progress, he knows this and has a good attitude about it,, Diame is on the decline in mentality and ability.

Yeah, i actually think we’ll be more suited to the prem under rafa in terms of tactics and also transfers, im confident we’ll be able to attract some decent players and he’ll have vast knowledge and contacts of all the european markets, particularly in italy and spain.

    Lewspi

Murphy will go, rafa also said tho that mtiro will stay didn’t he?

Also i love that the club post the full 90 after every game, even tho in the prem every game is streamed abroad, i hope they still post the full match, i just love watching back our games lol.

As much as i think rafa has got it wrong at times this season e.g. fulham at home for going to cautious and defensive, overall i actually love the brand of football we play. I love how when we know we can, we’ll play out from the back, be patient and carve opponents open with some good passing etc. then in other games when we have to, we’ll sit back and counter and be more direct. i love that we’re tactically flexible, thats the beauty of rafa, he’s made me see that football isn’t all about pretty football. I used to want the likes of laudrup, martinez, but the simple fact is they are nowhere near tactically flexible or experienced as someone like rafa, maybe thats why rafa is a winner and they’re not.

the minute promotion is guaranteed we can start looking forward to the Prem
till then its 3 point from the next game that’s the most important
I’m sure Rafa will have a list as long as your arm locked away till promotion is guaranteed it will only come out when the champagne corks start to pop and i’m sure there will be some surprises on it

9 top players is a bit fanciful and not at all necessary I think. The squad is full of hard running and competent players and has all positions covered, and all could do a job in a decent epl squad. I think we need an injection of about 5 quality players in select positions to compete for a top half epl finish. Primarily striker, winger and central mid, and then fullback, centre back and attacking mid if De Jong hasn’t proved his fitness.
