Fans Reflect On A Bizarre Night But Another Great Win

Newcastle fans are reacting this morning to another Newcastle win – this time 1-0 against Burton Albion so it’s the perfect result for Benitez – a win and a clean sheet.

But it wasn’t perfect refereeing and the Newcastle win has been completely overshadowed in the national press by a terrible mistake by referee Keith Stroud.

He should have had Matt Ritchie retake his penalty in the first half after it was disallowed for encroachment, but instead he gave a free kick to Burton.

What had he been smoking?

Rafa Benitez gets involved – Hey what are you doing!

Here’s some reaction this morning to the game, but it’s mostly about the incompetence of the officials.

Hayden was dropped due to him feeling”tightness” and colbeck is unwell.

That’s all that was said last night.

I thought mbemba done well after so much time out

Still wondering why he has been out so long .

We are 10 points ahead of Huddersfield. Which means they need 4 wins to overtake us with 6 games left.

We need 4 wins to guarantee promotion

    OR

If we win the next 3 we are also safely promoted. Even if Huddersfield win the next three too… there won’t be enough games to catch us after that.

Cheers mate, thankfully no new injury issues then

Supposedly Mbemba doesnt follow Rafas instructions to well enough and he is still struggling to settle in Newcastle but just rumors

It could well be the instructions mate.

    He’s a good player imho.

Didn’t get to see the full game nearly fell outta my wheels of steel and left early

Loved the team sheet last night all that was missing for me was mitro.

Blofal @2 – that’s not quite right, Ed explained it a few blogs back. The top and bottom of it is we need 11 points to be absolutely sure so it’s more than 3 wins although assuming Huddersfield slip up somewhere that would probably be enough but not mathematically.

U reckon he will get a few games though?

    magspuggy
It is the rumour but who knows if its true could just be because hes behind Clark who has been incredible all season

Agree it was a good team sheet but not so much on the Mitro omission haha

Whispers down here in the midlands that WBA are sniffing round Gayle.

the biggest disappointment for me this season is Perez
of all the players i thought he would be the one to improve the most under Rafa
he gets into some great goal scoring positions then fluffs his lines just doesn’t /can’t take his chances
i would play Gayle in that role and start with Murphy up front

Hibbit . That laddie baffles me he does things that are really difficult then fluffs the easy stuff.

I expected him to tear this league apart but sometimes he looks lost tbh.
I hope he gets a goal scoring run and he needs it quickly or he may be away soon.

I agree mbemba has talent I just struggle to see him being happy with his lot with us atm.

Diame is a hard worker and rarely gets any praise not my motm last night but he was top three.

Keith Stroud – what a bellend, you are!
    This is simply unacceptable.
How can a ref who has been doing his job for 29 years, 3 in the PL, not now a basic rule?
Then we have HippoHeed whingeing about a foul on Zaha, slating the linesman, but Mr Sroud barely getting a mention, on Sky.

Think Ritchie, Dummett and Diame were our best players.
Darlow made one good save froma free-kick -distribution is still in need of work, but is fine for PL.
Anita was wide, on touchline, most of game, but rarely got the ball. Was not at his best, but did ok.
Dummett did well going forward, put in a few good crosses, linked well with Atsu and Ritchie. Stays back at opposition corners, due to his pace and stopped a few breakaways.
Lascalles is solid but slow on the ball.
Mbemba was a right mix – some very good, some very iffy! Nowhere near MoM

Shelvey was erratic, especially his shooting!
Diamewasmuch better in midfield -solid, worked really hard, some good passing
Ritchie was superb, must be player of the season. Excellent football brain, left and right foot good, tireless – mind, expected Stroud to disallow his goal and give a foul to the corner flag – rule 999
Atsu showed brilliant first touch, ability to beat man, but some poor crosses, poor decision making and not sure he is the answer
Perez did some excellent things, some great touches, great lay-offs-but also some awful passes, ran into trouble, – a frustrating player
Gayle worked hard and could have had 3 or4 goals on another night.

Just after the penalty Gayle and Perez were 2 on 1 with their keeper in the 6 yard box and Gayle shot, hitting the keeper-pass to Perez = goal. Why is this not on highlights?

Murphy did well when he came on – if we’re going to play long balls, he has to start – with Gayle, would be lethal. Surely Murph/Gayle would be better than Perez?

Hope he keeps Diame in middle v Sheff Wed.
Shame Yedlin not fit -better than Big Vurn
Would love to see Murph at 9, Gayle at 10, Perez on bench.
Murph would be focal point for any long balls, and crosses.
Hope Mbemba gets another game, but he does have errors in him. Good on the ball.

We could have had a hatful of goals if the penalty was scored, more relaxed, with better shooting, especially Shelvey and better final ball. Also last 10, lacked precision when on break. Never really thought Burton threatened a goal.

Jeff Stelling on Sky made a huge deal of the Keith Stroud penalty incident; in fact it was the main story of the programme.

Good job we ended up winning last night, it’s a joke that that happened. Anyways can do nothing but moan about it and move on. 3 points closer to promotion.

The financial results for year end have been published so should be interesting to see what the part time accountants on here make of them 🙂

£19m made from last year in the prem for being on TV. Only £0.9m made this year for being on TV. £40m loss from relegation, chronicle writers saying mike Ashley will invest in the summer.

Few players play great after a long lay off, so bearing that in mind I thought Mbemba had a good game. As with any player, he needs a run of games to get back up to speed.
Thought Perez had another frustrating game. Dummett was solid as a rock last night and even looked a threat going forward. Atsu’s control and dribbling is excellent. Needs to practice the crossing part of his game which is the only thing that can let him down. Definitely prefer Yedders to Anita at right back. Diame was really good and a close second to motm for me. Seems to play the deeper role far better than the No10 imo. Gayle still getting up to pace and had a great chance to put Perez in for a tap in but chose to shoot. Being a striker you can forgive that. All in all a good performance that deserved a bigger margin of victory.

Alreet Clint. Shelvey is still running the show mate. Sprays the ball around and can turn defence into attack at the drop of a hat. Still has the tendency to throw in a rash tackle though which is a bit scary, because we play much better with him in the team and can’t afford to lose him now. When he plays well, we play well, which says it all really.

Can’t say I gave mate, but if Rafa wants to keep him he’ll stay. Think there’ll be a lot of coming and going in the summer though. Most of the first team will become more squad players and squad players now will move on. Rafa will be ruthless when it comes to building a winning side. Think next season will be more about starting to build and consolidating, with the following season finishing the squad off. Hopefully Rafa will extend his contract because getting relegated kinda lost him a season of his plans. I think Ashley will back him with cash so I see good times ahead.

    Booby
funny I gave My MOM to Diame just from Ritchie, Dummett and Mbemba

Chronicle’s Lee Ryder Diame equal worst player 6 merit marks – saying – ‘not really suited to a deeper role’ – must of been at a different match to me! He also gave Anita 8 merit marks – though he was poor last night and his distribution was not like him.

I see the tele was showing England ladies world cup qualifier against Norway penatly cock up by the ref when he/she did the same thing England scored the equaliser from the pen spot in the last minute but he/ she disallowed the goal giving Norway a indirect free kick whoch would of seen them go theough.

Two days later they all had to come back change into their kit retake the penalty a play out the last minute of the game – England scored it to earn a draw and progress.

leads onto just wonder if we had lost or drawn would the TOON of had a case to replay the remaining 50 odd minutes????
