Rafa Benitez has talked about why both central midfielders Jack Colback and Isaac Hayden were surprisingly left out of the squad that got the job done at home on Wednesday night, with a very good 1-0 win at home to Burton.
But it was not before we saw more ridiculously poor officiating when all four officials showed they didn’t understand the rules about retaking a penalty if encroachment should happen.
That cost us a goal in the first half.
Did we say it was ridiculous – then add embarrassing to that.
Isaac Hayden with the boss – could start tomorrow at Hillsborough
What other rules do those officials not understand?
We had expected Isaac Hayden to have started the game on Wednesday night, after he had come on and played a little against Wigan.
But Mo Diame came in against Burton to partner Jonjo Shelvey and Mo did well.
Local lad Jack Colback was also not in the squad for the Brewers.
This is what gaffer Rafa has said about the two missing players as reported in the Shields Gazette today:
“Jack Colback was feeling bad during Tuesday night – a lot of fever – and he was not available.”
“Isaac Hayden was a little bit tired after the last game against Wigan, and so we didn’t want to take any risks.”
“We will see the resolution of Jack, obviously.”
“But I think Hayden could be fine too after a couple of days to treat him and to work with him.”
Once he’s fully fit we expect Isaac Hayden to play alongside Jonjo Shelvey in central midfield – we hope that’s tomorrow afternoon in the late kickoff game.
What do you think?

Comment #1Daiem dropping back and seeing how well he does there for a run of games might be a blessing and could give him a better chance of being retained.

GK: Elliot, Woodman
RB: Mbemba, Mbabu
CB: Lascelles, Hanley
LB: Dummett
CM: Diame, new creative CM to compete with Shelvey
AM: Perez
RW/LW: Lazaar, Atsu, Aarons
ST: Gayle and an all-rounder type.
A bit of shuffling around for the likes of Diame and Mbemba.
Get rid of Colback, Anita, Gouffran, Gamez, Haidara, Krul, Murphjy and Mitrovic.
Was keen on Sigurdsson, but after a little thinking we already have a very similar player in SDJ, if, a HUGE, if, he can stay fit, so can’t see us forking out for Sigurdsson.
A fairly realistic look towards next season.

Comment #5If Defoe would be a available on a free, then it wouldn’t be the wildest idea to believe there is some possibility.
You would assume the reason Ashley does buy older players, is due to the depreciation in value – you are essentially paying twice for a player via wages and their loss of value. If Defoe isn’t going to cost a fee, there is no transfer fee that depreciation can levy against.
It would simply come down to figuring out if Defoe is worth what he wants in wages, for the duration he wants to receive it.

Comment #9The game V Burton, the more i think about it the more i see the problem all started because of Gayle, what the hell was he thinking about, the ref took a lot of stick and rightly so because he should know the rules, but so should Gayle, he was almost level with Ritchie when he kicked it, what would have happened if the ref got the rule right and richie missed because of more pressure?
i have no sympathy with the refs, they messed up big time.

Yes, it’s clear enough Burton players encroached
as well, but the consequences are different when
the defending team encroaches, so that isn’t
relevant.
Even under the rules being properly applied,
Gayle encroaching could have led to the penalty
being re-taken – and perhaps missed on the 2nd
attempt.
Something else I don’t get – there is encroaching
going on at ALL penalties, but refs rarely enforce
it.
So – the question is – why did the ref decide to enforce
it on this occasion?
Was it because one of the linesmen had said he thought
Gayle had dived, and he was trying to ‘rectify’ his
penalty decision?
