Benitez Very Disappointed – We Made Too Many Mistakes

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez was obviously disappointed with a sloppy performance from his team today at Hillsborough, which didn’t measure up to what’s required in our promotion drive back to the Premier League.

We were well beaten today and as Rafa quickly points out, this Newcastle side made far too many mistakes and certainly didn’t deserve anything out of the game with the Owls the better side.

Newcastle are now second top of the league 2 points behind Brighton and we will need to start winning maybe four of the last five games to win the Championship this season.

Rafa Benitez on the sidelines today

Rafa Benitez was asked about the game and this is what he said as reported in the Chronicle tonight:

“Very disappointing.” “I think that we didn’t do what we had to do, we made so many mistakes, and we gave them chances at the beginning.”

“Even with the mistakes we could have scored a late goal and go into the dressing room 1-0 up, that we didn’t deserve.”

“Then after we started the second half much better, we had chances, and we were on top of them.”

“But then we made a silly foul and we conceded a goal and then it was all uphill, we have to keep going, but then we continued making some mistakes and didn’t manage the game.”

“We conceded another goal, and when we had the chances the keeper was making the difference.”

“We couldn’t score the second goal when we were on top of them, but without managing the situation then you won’t make sure you have more chances.”

Well there you have it – a much improved performance and a win is now needed on Good Friday against a good Leeds United team.

I watched the game on TV and didn’t think that SW were better than us. Sorry to disagree with almost everyone else but I thought it was a fairly even game and we had plenty of chances to win it.

Shelvey alone had enough chances to win the game but for some good saves by their GK.

If Perez could be just a little more accurate with his shooting he could have got a couple and he wasn’t anywhere near as bad as many of the comments on here have made him out to be.

And it was SW that was hanging on at the end.

    Shelvey easily MOM for me.

I was at the game and agree with your analysis
We were weak at centre back and missed Clarke massively but otherwise a few breaks and it would have been different
What is for sure this squad is now scratching the bottom of the barrel and as such it’s tough
No fit Gayle, no Clarke ,no Hayden,no yedlin no wonder it’s a struggle

It was painful until Mitch came on…if only earlier then we might have turned a poor performance into a point. I thought Dummett and Lacelles were awful today, looks like he had lead in his boots, didn,t get off the grass for either goal, lethargic as hell when he should be leading. All in all a bad day, but at least Huddersfield lost to lessen the blow. I just want to see a bit more bravery in the team selection and go after teams and sod the pissing about at the back and crab football.
