Newcastle Now Need This Number Of Points For Promotion

It was a bad day at the office for Newcastle United today at Hillsborough and let’s hope we can bounce back in terms of a very good performance on Good Friday against Leeds, because this performance against Sheffield Wednesday simply wasn’t good enough.

If we can get Ciaran Clark and Isaac Hayden back that would be good and it’s possible given we have six days before the next games.

Even though this was an unwanted display and result today we still moved closer to promotion – 3 points closer because Huddersfield lost at Nottingham Forest.

Rafa Benitez – was disappointed with display today

Here’s how things stand at the top of the Championship after today’s game.

PosTeamGamesGDPoints
1Newcastle464594
2Brighton463493
3Reading46485
4Sheffield Wednesday461581
5Huddersfield46-281
6Fulham462880

Everything there looks pretty good if we were at the top of the league so that has to be the goal – somehow we have to try to take maximum points from our final five games.

If we can gain just 2 points on Brighton we should go top because of our better goal difference.

So it was a bad day for Newcastle but we need to buck up and put things right with a good win next Friday.

    Missed bus again!!!!!!

Essex Geordie Bill // Apr 8, 2017 at 10:00 PM

I watched the game on TV and didn’t think that SW were better than us. Sorry to disagree with almost everyone else but I thought it was a fairly even game and we had plenty of chances to win it.

Shelvey alone had enough chances to win the game but for some good saves by their GK.

If Perez could be just a little more accurate with his shooting he could have got a couple and he wasn’t anywhere near as bad as many of the comments on here have made him out to be.

And it was SW that was hanging on at the end.

    Shelvey easily MOM for me.

I was at the game and agree with your analysis
We were weak at centre back and missed Clarke massively but otherwise a few breaks and it would have been different
What is for sure this squad is now scratching the bottom of the barrel and as such it’s tough
No fit Gayle, no Clarke ,no Hayden,no yedlin no wonder it’s a struggle

ridiculous that you are now not allowed to criticise a loss
its not rocket science we have a great squad especially attackers but we only play 1 upfront and play a half fit one at that
we should be worrying teams before a ball is kicked we ain’t as we set up the same regardless of how physical they are
i dont think its a coinsidense that we have lost to the teams that we have lost to its teams that bully more and we have 2 strikers that can bully just as much in this league but are not used

Rafa may have looked at the bigger picture in the light of Huddersfield’s defeat and selected a team and tactics to save enough for the remaining (more winnable) matches.

We weren’t bullied today ,in fact our closing down had wednesday on the back foot
We made two stupid mistakes ,down to the centre halves .wednesday only chances in the. First half came from central defensive errors
And both goals were gifts ,in the end games like today rest on small margins and today we were on the wrong side of them
They are a very good side ,in fact I would make them favourites to go up via the play offs do there is no shame in today’s result

    I totally agree.
We have the players in the championship to play attacking football with two decent striker’s up front.
Rafa maybe disappointed, but I’m disappointed with Rafa for sticking with his sit back and hoof to our lone striker tactics. What I don’t understand is why he waits so long before making changes.

yorkymag seriously so how many chances did we get in the first half?

gayle got nothing upfront infact im struggling to remember a touch he had in their box

flip that with both mitro and murphy on we peppered them and scored a goal and missed a few others!!

Deep down most of us knew this season would be harder than the last time we went down.

Clark is a massive miss imho we play better when he’s fit ,same goes for yedlin.

Hopefully Huddersfield have had their run and we go forwards and tonk Leeds.

Its never easy being a black and white is it ??

    Well
    Shelvey hit the bar
Perez had a couple of good chances
    Shelvey a decent kick
    Gouffran had a decent chances
    And there were more
1 of those would have changed the game
    More importantly
Wednesday did not create a chance in the first half that was not a defensive mistake

One defeat and the Rafa haters come crawling out the woodwork! Yeah we were poor today and it is very disappointing but their goals came from individual errors at set pieces – you can’t blame Rafa for that. We have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for Leeds.

martoon its not the defensive errors i’m on about
its the same tactics against a team that battered us up top last time
we played and were far far better with at least murphy up top but with mitro we had so many more good chances

yorky shelvey hit the bar from well inside our own half!!!
hardly great team play is it infact probably more his own frustration
imagine shelvey putting balls into a big man who can then feed gayle instead of just trying to put ball into him with a backline of 6ft’ers

It’s not about hating Rafa, I don’t think anyone has said that, he’s a great manager. But sometimes changes need to be made. We’ve become very predictable, you can’t argue with that. We as well as other teams know exactly what coming before the match even kicks off.

I love Rafa but hate his fcuking tactics and leaving it too late for subs. He is a very good manager but if he was as brilliant as some make out surely with the money spent on his players, the best squad/best manager we should be winning the league comfortably? Not losing to w@nk teams at home.

I’m all for Hanley and Clark starting as cb pairing, Lascelles is shite his mistakes always seem to lead to goals and Mbemba today was too nervy. The good news is we have a foot on the prem ladder and alot of the shite we have on show won’t be next season,

    Your argument has no logic
Of course we looked more dangerous with two big strikers
when Wednesday went into retreat ,having gone 2 up and we hit long balls at the big strikers
Had we started like that they would have ripped us apart with their very tricky midfielders ,our game plan worked but the goal didn’t come
    Simple as that
If we had gone one short in midfield we would have been destroyed
Wednesday have a bigger and better squad than us it’s no disgrace
forestierie ,Rhodes and the lad from Barnsley on the bench all stinger than anything we have up front
    Hooper ,and fletcher
That’s 5 centre forwards that are better than all ours except a fit Gayle
We have no rite to win sometimes you gave to say we were beaten by a stronger team

Yeah but these tactics have worked pretty well for most of the season. It’s easy with 20-20 hindsight to say we should have done this, we should have that. I agree I think Rafa is too cautious in our home games but in away games I think it is a legitimate tactic and has worked pretty well.

Away games soaking up pressure and then counter works brilliantly for us. That was up until there was no Gayle,Yedlin or Atsu playing, all the pace we have is within them the rest are way to slow to counter especially when I need 10 touches Perez is on.

first of all ,we applied more pressure from the 88th minute than we had all game, too late, we played like champions for the last 6 mins , what happened in the 88 mins before that?Shelvey was fantastic and created our only noteable efforts – from nothing. we didnt create 1 clear cut chance as far as i can remember . You dont get points for ifs and buts- if we had scored another goal we would have drew – but we didnt. This was not as much a bad performence, more a worrying one . We have played badley too often this season and scraped a point or 3 today we played badly but our luck ran out. I watched the brighton game last night and the worry for me is the way we play with fear and brighton with confidence, why ? ive no idea but that mindset will cost us the championship, yeah we will go up withiout a doubt but next year something has to change , playing with fear against class sides will only mean 1 thing. If some of these players cant handle the pressure they need to look for another club . we must invest in players who are capable of playing in the top league. yeah we have quality players ready to come back ,the sooner the better.

we have a 100+ mill squad of 25 players but out of that we can only play 1 up front regardless of the opposition
we dominated in the 1st quarter passing it round in our own half thats because we have no hold up player in the final third!!

It seems to me that whilst Rafa has got the club more organised, other than transfers, plus the squad in better shape and playing in a more organised way. The game has moved on and the modern day strategy is around transition and quickly breaking forward, not a static strategy of compressing the game. Yes we are going to be promoted but has Rafa used his time wisely and instilled a winning formula that will be successful in the Premiership?

    It’s really not that simple
You can’t give midfield away to a side as good as Wednesday ,playing two up top you just wont stay in the game
Murphy and mitro would not even make the Wednesday squad never mind bench
We have not got the quality up front a fit Gayle is essential and we have not had that for 6 weeks
Murphy was very poor today and he is miles better than mitro

We played absolutely no different today than the last two games, Richie got us the points with one brilliant goal in our last match. We came up against a better team today but we played exactly the same, Rafa changed things very late in the game (as usual) and we looked a different team. We’ll be exactly the same against leeds, probably get another football lesson.
Rafa is a great manager but we’ve become predictable and instead of making subs he waits until the game is almost over then presses the panic button.
I just don’t understand why he leaves it so late or even tries something new.
    Karanka comes to mind.

Absolut bolocks we have done brilliant to be in the position we are in and had we not had Rafa we would be mid table
