Perez, Gouffran And Mbemba Start At Hillsborough

Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the game at Hillsborough this afternoon against Sheffield Wednesday.

Mbemba retains his position at the back and Diame stay in defensive midfield with both Isaac Hayden and Jack Colback still not available.

Yoan Gouffran comes back in for Christian Atsu, probably because of his work rate and his ability to track back and defend.

Mitrovic and Murphy are both on the bench as Newcastle just have to score goals and somehow win this game this afternoon.

This is what Rafa has said about today’s opponents during the build up to the game:

“They deserved their win against us and were very well organised. They are a good team and know what to do.”

“They were nearly there last season and, when you have the same structure and the same players, they know what you have to do to get points in this division.”

“It will be tough and difficult, especially now they are in a play-off position. Like a lot of teams they are fighting for their target.”

“If they are in the play-offs, it’s because they deserve to be there.”

Three in five fans think we will win this game today – we need the win.

Sheffield Wednesday have Hooper & Fletcher as strike partners, with Jordon Rhodes on the bench. Plenty of firepower for the opposition.

A very attacking bench today too:

Elliot, Gamez, Haidara, Ameobi, Atsu, Mitrovic, Murphy

Looking a bit threadbare through the centre with no CB or CMs on the bench.

As expected Gouffran in for Atsu. About time Gouffran did something of note as he’s been MIA for a few months so I’ll go 2-0 Toon, Gouffran with a scrappy one and Shelvey to perk up too and get one.

You look at Sheff Wed ST options and they should really be challenging for automatic promotion in this league. Foresteri and Rhodes on the bench would start at the vast majority of Championship clubs.

The refs owe us one before the season is over too. This is our toughest game left I think so I’d take it today.

I’ve gone for a Toon win 1-2, and with Huddersfield losing we have more incentive.

Good attacking bench with Ameobi, Atsu, Mitrovic and Murphy on their.

    Ron,
Congrats! I had it also, my 4th bingo win. Is Jail still keeping track of the Rafa bingo? Haven’t seen him on the blog for quite a spell…

Yup, our lads have to be looking at the Huddersfield result and feeling that little bit more energised and relaxed, can only be good.

On the other hand Sheff Wed are under real pressure now from Fulham after been in the play-off spots for so long.

Aye Sheff Wed may want this more than we do, but that could also play into our hands and open the game up.

This is setting up to be a cracking match, if both teams turn up.

    Ron,
Not sure mate…..have not seen either Jail or Jib post anything lately. Been kinda quiet on here.

My score prediction was also 1-2. Hope that holds true too, though would be happy with any winning score! 🙂

A win today and we have 1 foot in the epl. But knowing us, we like to do it the hard way and will end up losing.

If Fairport’s your favourite band, you’re eligible to be known as a BOF.

What’s a BoF you may ask? A Boring Owld Fart who’s enjoyed good music….. and possibly the things that went with it in those heady days of yore.

Wonderful opportunity for us to cement our position in the automatic promotion places with both Huddersfield and Reading losing.

    Chris Waugh?:-
#nufc now need just nine points to mathematically secure promotion (though eight will be enough given the vastly-superior goal difference)

Well the football gods sure are shining down on us! Reading and Huddersfield both going down!! So if my maths is right, all we need now is a victory tonight and we’ll be 5 points from guaranteed promotion (assuming Huddersfield win all their remaining games). Come on boys, let’s get this done.

Win this game and all we need is one more if Hudd has either a draw or loss. 90 minutes away from a great day.

I’d agree, this is the one game after the Brighton Huddersfield double header we had that worried me. On their game they’re a very good side!

This one needs approached with caution in my opinion!

A win today and we can pretty much begin dreaming of the players we would like to see acquired in the summer for next season’s premier league run! And with Swansea losing again today that means Sigurdsson is a step closer to being our much needed #10 upgrade!

(I know, I know we still have to been promoted…)

we have tried this 3-1 forward formation at both Reading and Burton – both times we failed to carve out clear cut chance and although we got 4 points from both games it was very poor to watch and we looked vulnerable at the back. My preference would be to play Murphy or Mitro in Gayles place and drop Gayle into Perezes postion to feed off any knockdowns etc… A tall CF with 3 speedy forwards zipping around him would cause havoc.
