Rafa – Everybody Must Now Do Their Jobs To Secure Promotion

Newcastle United’s financial results through last June 30th were announced earlier this week, but Rafa Benitez was not too interested in them – not at the moment anyway.

He is only concentrating on doing his job and get Newcastle automatically promoted and win the Championship,  if at all possible.

Brighton are back on top after their very good 2-1 win at QPR last night, so we must win this afternoon at Hillsborough to stay on top and keep at least 10 points between us and Huddersfield Town in 3rd place.

Rafa Benitez and Keith Stroud on Wednesday night

This is what Rafa has told the local press, as reported in the Northern Echo today:

“The money is so important now in the Premier League, so everybody wants to be there.”  “But I would also say that the message is clear – we must concentrate on our games.”

“It will not change anything for us. We have to do our job. That is to get promoted, get three points and win the next game.” “Afterwards, we can analyse the accounts and everything.”

“We don’t talk about transfers.” “Why do we need to talk about the future when I want everyone concentrating on the present?”

“Maybe if you had asked me or some fans at the beginning, we would have said it could be fine to qualify for a play-off place.”

“But we were not thinking about that. We were thinking about getting promoted. As soon as you are sure that you are there, you try to win more things if you can.”

“I think it is really important for everyone to understand that we can be talking and talking, but we have to do our job.”

“We have to finish it off.”

There’s a lesson from Rafa in being completely single-mindedness and staying focused.

We hope our lads can put on a fine performance today and get those 3 points in the bag and then our next game is at home to Leeds United next Friday – Good Friday.

3 points today is all we are thinking about.

Theoretically we can be caught. However, how many times have we seen the third place team put a monumental effort in to get third and miss out completely? A push like that from third would mean that they would probably be less prepared for the play offs than their competitors who – once they know they are safe in a playoff position – will be preparing only for playoffs. This must be on the mind of Huddersfield, for example. Push hard for second vs prepare properly for play offs

Well we need the three points as we seem to be forever playing catch-up, who does that put under the most pressure i wonder?

Anyway, I’m still thinking a nailed on 3 points today, we seem to do better away from home against teams at the top than we do at home against teams nearer the bottom.

It’s all part of the rich tapestry of life that is being a Toon Fan.

Very hard on Hanley to miss out last game – probably played
    better than Lascelles.

But – delighted to see Mbemba get his chance and play well.

I would be tempted to revert to Hanley for his experience for
    the game today.
