Benitez Concerned By Abject Newcastle Performance

One of the things that Rafa Benitez has been very concerned about all season is that his Newcastle players will take their opponents for granted, get too big for their boots and not bother showing up for a game.

That seemed to happen on Saturday when Sheffield Wednesday started the game like a steam train and kept going and Newcastle never seemed able to get into the game until it was too late at the end.

One of the things that will have horrified Benitez was Newcastle’s  very poor defending and we were lucky to get away with conceding only two goals.

Rafa Benitez on Saturday

In addition to a very poor performance, we also lost Dwight Gayle to another hamstring injury and since there are only four weeks left in the season he may not play again this term.

So we will not have the player up front who has scored 22 Championship goals this season for us and it will be another concern for the manager.

This is what Rafa said after the game as reported in the local press today:

“We didn’t manage the tempo and the control well enough, so we have to improve.”

“We had our chances to win and at the end we were on top of them. but no result.”  “We have to defend much better next time out.”

“We have to take our game back to the level that we know we can play at.”

“There were too many mistakes and we gave them too many options.”

We have to hope it was just one bad day at the office, but if we cannot beat Leeds United at home on Friday it would seem that we will have a difficult job of winning the Championship.

The odds are well in our favor that we can finish in the top two of course, but now is not the time tor the side to implode.

Rafa will want a good finish to this season so we can start next season (in the Premier League) and get a good start there.

The players were very poor on Saturday and they need to look themselves in the mirror and make up for that performance in the final five games left this season.

Five wins would be good.

Apart from ten minutes after half time when it was the Shelvey show, from the first minute when, Dummett miscued his clearence straight to one of their players who hit the bar to when Mitrovic came on, we were second to every ball – looked like the players thought they could just turn up and they would win.
I don’t usually gove a MOM when I am not there at the game but I gave it to Mitrovic because he showed passion and commitment which galvanised the TOON into action. Should of been on when they scored their second goal not 15 minutes later. Like to see him partner Murphy up front

Was it 1996/97 season and we were 14 points clear at the top of the table and ended up second? Did we choke and or not good enough, will it happen again. No comparing the side on this one though. Squeaky bum time?

i’d love ?? to see them 2 in the team together, 442-352 with loads of crosses going in for them. they would scare the shut off of defences

It was exactly the same start game as Brighton got battered first 20 minutes could of easily been 3 or 4 down not 1 but we crawled our way back into the game and won in the end with a large slice of luck in Diame’s goal that changed the game

This is the reality of it.
The benefits of a big squad and rotation never happened.
Rafa has gone to the same team when he can since mid November.
We are struggling with a few injuries and with some a lack of form. Several players look jaded.
Rafa always talks about control – too much for me.
I think some players have been marginalised as they don’t fit the profile Rafa wants. Thing is we now need them to step up. One of those would be Mitro.
