Benitez Keen On Signing This Talented Player In The Summer

Rafa Benitez wants about six top players brought in this summer to fortify and improve the Newcastle squad for the Premier League and yesterday there were a number of reports about one or two players we seem to be targeting.

One was Brazilian striker Willian Jose, who joined Real Sociedad last July and has had a good season with 11 goals in 28 games for the Spanish club.

Another report in the Sun is that we want 20 year-old Guingamp winger Marcus Coco, who has played 6 times for the French U21 side.

The Sun report is that Coco was a target of manager Rafa Benitez last summer, but we have no record of Newcastle ever being interested in this player.

Coco has real speed and ability and is expected to leave his club this summer and it appears Rafa is really interested in signing the 20 year-old for a fee estimated at around £10M.

Coco has played 33 times for Guingamp in all competitions this season and he’s scored four goals and has two assists.

And since making his Ligue 1 debut in February of 2015 against Girondins de Bordeaux, he has played 71 games for his club with 5 goals and 4 assists.

Stoke City and Southampton are two Premier League clubs also said to be interested in the player this summer.

Newcastle have a history of signing good French wingers over the last 25 years or so, although of late we have made some poor buys from France.

But with Rafa now in charge of all football matters at the club, he must see something in Coco that he can develop and hopefully turn the youngster into a top player at Newcastle.

Sounds good to us.

What do you think?

We may not win the league now (I had us down as coming second and getting 92 points I think in our pre-season forecast thingy)…but at the end of the day the job is done…it’s not important we win the league it’s just imperative we get promoted…and the chances of Huddersfield catching us now are very remote indeed…so in my book no need to be negative and no need to go overboard with the “he’s sh!te and he’s sh!ite” malarky…let’s celebrate the fact we’re back up and spend the next 4 months trying to work out who’s going, who’s coming, who’s staying and how big’s the budget…always good for filling column inches 🙂

Me had 96 points and second – looks like second – I’ll take that.

RAFA might want to control the players and the style we play – but it seems on the pitch that we are to rigid and other teams now – home or away the opposition seem to control the tempo of the game as we try to slow the play down

are you not worried about our style of play or his reliance on the same players,
i worry because the players i think should go are the ones he is playing like Diame, goofy (out of contract) Lascelles Darlow, Collback .and the players i think could do a job for us , Mitro Mbemba Atsu Anita could be out the door.

Completely agree with posada catchy charlie and others who have concerns re our style of play. Rafa alarmed me way back when we wouldnt attack sunderland at home and even Sky tv panellist was shouting on tv when we put two in box late in game for a corner v Villa away, two games we needed to win. People claimed the win v Brighton was a masterclass. It was in its arse. If we dont win v leeds the pressure will come on us if huddersfield do. So, home to leeds, 52k, best manager ever ( but peaked years ago, wont change tactics, dull football, inflexible) , only a few games left. Are you confident of a win??
