There is a report in Portugal today that Newcastle may be interested in 31 times capped Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho.
Carvalho is a defensive midfielder who has been at Sporting Lisbon since 2005 when he joined them at the age of 13 and he came through their famous Youth Academy.
He turned 24 only last Friday so he’s the right age and a number of top clubs have been interested in the player, who was born in Angola back in 1992.
Richard Carvalho – Newcastle target this summer
The report is in A Bola and in truth they have not been all that accurate in some of their previous stories linking Newcastle with players in Portugal.
But Carvalho is a very good player and would be an excellent signing for us this summer as Rafa Benitez attempts to increase the class and experience in the Newcastle squad before we start back in the Premier League in August.
While it’s still not mathematically certain we will finish in the top two it would take a miracle for us not to finish first or second in the Championship now.
I hope I’m not tempting fate by saying that!
The fee for Carvalho could be a problem for Newcastle and in the summer Everton made a move for him and offered a decent £16.7M, but that was much lower than Sporting’s valuation – which was £30M and up.
West Brom and Manchester City are the other two clubs mentioned to be interested, but it’s a question of whether Newcastle would be willing to pay £30M and even more for this player?
So if that’s the fee being asked we’ll let Manchester City overpay for him.
But it’s good to be linked with a player of Carvalho’s class and he played the whole game last summer when Portugal beat France 1-0 in the final to win the Euro 2016 Championship in France.
