Rafa Wants New Target – Experienced Premier League Defender

The Independent is reporting today that Rafa Benitez wants a complete overhaul of the Newcastle squad and while that’s not really surprising, the fact they say he wants Stoke City center-back Ryan Shawcross is.

The Chronicle last week reported that Rafa wanted six new players brought into the squad who could immediately play in the first team and he will also need to get rid of a number of players who have no future at the club.

It seems odd that Newcastle want Shawcross who turns 30 in October, but there again he has massive Premier League experience having played the last nine seasons with Stoke City in the Premier League amassing over 270 Premier League appearances for them.

Ryan Shawcross – 29 year-old Stoke center-back

Newcastle do need a top center-back brought in this summer with Chancel Mbemba likely to leave the club.

The world-class manager will be targeting players who have shown they are good enough to play well in the Premier League.

We thought that maybe Ryan would become a free agent this summer, which was why Rafa was interested in him, but his contract at Stoke still has another 14 months to run.

We’re sure Mike Ashley would like to have younger players come into the Newcastle squad in the summer, but we do expect Mike to back Rafa 100%.

So it will be interesting to see if Rafa will still  have a free hand in the transfer market this summer.

For the sake of Newcastle United and for the owner of the club, Mike Ashley – he should have.

    our toon

you’ll probably disagree with me on this but i love lascelles, but yes i admit hes been quite dodgy this season and its questionable whether hes good enough for PL, but i do think rafa will develop him into a solid centre back and i think hes a good leader, he will make his voice heard, and he was alright for us towards the end of our premier league season.

He’d be quite some signing languished at Stoke for a very long time though not sure how much his ability to play football has been damaged

I think a top CB would be a priority and Lascelles may well find himself on the bench at the expense of Clarke.

I think a lot of the questions with Lascelles and Mbemba are more about inconsistency and mental errors due to their age. Time, experience, and coaching is the cure because I think they have the “It factor” to be successful… I’m not sure how they measure these statistics but I seem to remember an article saying Mbemba was rated something like 8th among central defenders in Champions League the season before joining us. I don’t recall the source but I’m sure some on here do – Maybe WhoScored? So there is something there in Mbemba. I wouldn’t quit on him yet, or Lascelles.

But they have to earn their playing time and compete for their places.
