It Doesn’t Look Good For This Newcastle Player

Christian Atsu has been unable to nail down a starting position at Newcastle although the winger has had more playing time this season than he has since joining Chelsea from Porto in the summer of 2013.

The 42 times capped Ghanaian International (9 goals) has appeared 25 times for Newcastle with three goals during his season long loan.

But we wonder if that’s going to be enough for Rafa to make the deal permanent in the summer?

Christian Atsu – happy in training

Certainly Atsu is a popular player among the fans and he seems to be just a smashing lad, but Rafa is not sentimental in any way – and he will make the decision on whether to buy Atsu based on football only.

That’s one reason he is such a good and successful manager.

This is what Atsu has said when asked about his long term future, as reported in the Chronicle:

“I am just focused on the coming games.” “We have a number of games left and we want to win promotion.”

“I am just focusing on that.” “We just want to keep hoping and fighting this season, then we will think about this.”

“We will see what happens after the season.” “We have fought so hard this season – this is what we wanted.”

“We want to keep winning games. We do not want to give away what we have fought for from the start of the season.”

“For that reason we will keep working hard, keep fighting.”

Those are good words from Christian.

It’s clear that Atsu loves playing at Newcastle and that he also loves working with Rafa Benitez and respects him as one of the top coaches in the game.

We would like to see Rafa sign the 25 year-old in the summer, but somehow we don’t think that will happen.

It also looks like Yoan Gouffran will be released this summer since he hasn’t done enough in the second half of the season to warrant a new two year deal, when his contract runs out at the end of June.

We could see Rafa being both aggressive and ruthless in the summer, so that he can significantly strengthen the Newcastle squad for the Premier League next season.

There are a number of decisions to be made on a lot of Newcastle players and a majority of those could well be allowed to leave the club this summer.

They could include both Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran.

What do you think?

Don’t think Atsu has done enough in the championship to warrant being signed for us in the Prem, couple of good displays mixed with some mediocre and some poor – if he can’t nail a starting slot ahead of Gouff in the championship then he has no chance in Prem

    mindshaft,
Me either, if I was a Championship club looming for promotion next year I’d choose the Gouff if I had a choice of two. Atsu I think is heading for Ligue 1.

Jail and Co, is it that atsu just isn’t up to much or that Rafa prefers more defensive wingers like Gouffran? You have obviously seen more than me this season. Any thoughts? Is he just not good? Surely we need to get on the front foot at home v Leeds and make home advantage count? A home loss for us and likely win for Huddersfield with their game in hand to come would rattle the club and fans very very badly. But an attacking performance and a win would lift everyone and really galvanise us. But when was the last time we really took a team apart? In fairness to Rafa he will be worried re our current centre backs so will be mega cautious. One is over confident and overrated and the other is error ridden and doesn’t inspire confidence at all. That said, Rafa has to get them on the front foot and get the crowd involved early. But can u see that happening? Sadly I can’t. This cud be one of our most tense games in a long time. And with the pubs closed in Ireland for good Friday and me staying in an old cottage in the country with terrible broadband I’ll be screwed. 🙁

When does Atsu’s loan officially end?
When will players whose contracts are up in the summer be released?
Think some of these will be announced before we buy replacements, so we should start to see our squad changing.

From what I’ve watched, Atsu has speed, easily beats a man but his decision making, distribution and crossing are suspect. Excellent first touch. A bit lightweight. Excellent attitude. Probably back-up for Ritchie, at best. Problem is when Rafa plays Atsu and Ritchie, Ritchie ends up on the wrong wing.

toontaff2 – Player contracts normally run to the end of June but I’m not sure about loan agreements.

Gutted I couldn’t get a ticket for the game tomorrow. It’s on Sky so that’s one saving grace. Need to be on the front foot from the off. Lads need to turn up tomorrow. If not, it’s gonna be a long night

If we’re releasing Gouff/Anita/Sammy seems only fair to pay up their last few weeks and let them find a new club.
On NUFC.com says Atsu’s loan ends in May.

Unfortunately we have got quite a few Mickey Mouse players in our club who have struggled in the championship, so i wonder many Brighton will get rid of compared to us, wouldn’t be many.

    Munster,
I’d hardly call Ritchie a defensive winger and he’s been a mainstay in Rafas team all season. Townsend is not a defensive winger but Rafa made it clear he wanted him in his plans.

I wonder if Chris Hughton will still be at Brighton in January or will the chairman follow the recent trend of getting rid of the Championship manager that done so much to get them promoted.

    toontaff,
I’m sure the 1/3M a year they’ve been earning will soften the blow of unemployment while they find a new club to pay them 10K a week for the next few years.

@18, Jail, I would like to think he has earned the right to a full season in the Prem. In my opinion, he had done so with us, and the way he was treated was a disgrace.

If rafa wanted a no10 then why was he after McCarthy? Makes no sense to me as McCarthy is a holding / box to box midfielder. He identified the no10 by signing Diame

Bullet dodged by not giving rafa the money in the January, 20m would have been spent on McCarthy which is an absolute waste, a player that’s crocked again and a player that’s barely kicked a ball.

Plenty of more sensible options in the summer and better value to be gained in the summer
